Work, marriage, also was deeply unhappy living in Reno and always wanted to move onto somewhere else, eventually settling in Colorado. Dee and Jack didn't take it well, but Jack insisted he was responsible enough to care for her. He wasn't. The whole thing was a tragedy of errors.

Every morning I slick my hair back into a ponytail before I leave for the gym, and every time I do it, I think about a very specific middle school moment.

At this point, I was doing the most self-exploration while being inwardly insecure and outwardly overconfident, like most middle schoolers. So, I incorrectly categorized everyone into "cool" and "bitch." The people who had similar interests to me (fnaf, undertale, alternative fashion, etc) and the people who were exploring their sexuality or gender were all "cool." The people who didn't fit into that were "bitch." I even joined a lunch table full of people like me and called everyone outside of it "jealous," "bullies," and even "oppressive freaks" (which is insane ngl???)

Looking back on it, I was nervous about actually getting bullied. I was lucky and only got some weird looks and offhand "pick-me" comments, but my anxiety made it feel like everyone was picking on me.

But that's not the story.

One time, I was trying to put my hair up in class, and I had been struggling with it in the front row through the entire period. I could put it in a ponytail, but I couldn't get the hair on top of my head to slick back in one smooth mass like the other girls did. I was getting frustrated.

Once the lecture was done, we had a few minutes after class to wait for the bell, and I was still struggling with my hair. Immediately after the teacher was done, this girl stood up and walked over to me. I had seen her in class and all, but I had already classified her as "bitch." She always had basic clothes on, talked loudly with her friends, giggled like she had inhaled helium, and (worst of all) seemed like she didn't care about what others thought. I expected her to start making fun of me or something.

She asked me if I needed help with my hair. That was it. It was like some sort of twisted peace offering, and I struggled to comprehend it. I thought she might have been making fun of me by asking, but she didn't sound sarcastic. When I let her fix my hair, she showed me how to make a simple slick-back ponytail step by step. She was kind and completely shattered my stereotype of her.

I think about her every morning now because I wouldn't be able to put up my hair like I do without her. I wish I had kept talking to her after that. Funnily enough, most of my "cool" people ended up being bitches and I think having a friend outside of my set group would have been good for me.

Moral of the story, don't set anyone (including yourself) into locked boxes until you know who they are.
