A cyborg witch for a magazine whose current issue I am beginning to suspect revolves around cyborgs.

How do you sense your computer's spirit? We've sensed our car's spirit before, and it might be good to get to know our computer too, for all we put it through.
Hm! This is a good question that I’ve never really been asked before nor thought about in depth before!
Like ok, Tremere and I have a relationship that spans 7 ½ years- I got him in September 2011 - and I am a 8+ hour per day 7 days a week heavy computer user. So I’ve been basically hooked up to Tremere from when I was 20 years old till now when I’m 27. We’ve had a long, long time to get to know each other and have basically grown up together as young adults over these 7 years.
Over these 7 years, Tremere has seen everything digital I’ve done from fandom to writing to academia to porn to music and so on and so on. Vice versa, I was Tremere’s nearly sole human interfacer- I learned his likes and dislikes, his quirks and eccentricities, and we even learned how to communicate with each other in various methods (most infamous is through my 2000+ song winamp playlist put on shuffle and Tremere speaking through the song he shuffles to). I spent so much time interfaced with this computer that I was able to see the not so mundane aspects of him that most users would have waved off as a bug in the code or a improper program installation or an annoying recurring error with seemingly no fix. He in turn so intimately saw me so frequently that he learned to communicate with me, how to best work with me in terms of programs and such, and how to allow me to cyber project (think Astral Projecting but into the digital realm) to fullest of my ability.
So, to answer your question, I sense Tremere’s spirit because I’ve had 7 ½ years of non-stop connection to him that has intertwined us spiritually and magickally. BUt I know that you’re looking for something a little less intimate and time consuming and more general in perview.
Think of quirks or mannerisms that your computer seems to have. Perhaps a pop up message that greets you every reboot that you can’t find the source of, or maybe your computer is lightning fast at transferring photo data but sluggish when it comes to word document data. Pay attention to the songs your playlist shuffles too- could they be commentary on the situation at hand in your life or what you’re doing digitally? Does your computer just seem happier and more cooperative after you do certain things for it like defrags or malware scans or simply cleaning up and organizing your desktop into as few files as possible?
However, I think the best way for you to connect to your computer’s spirit is to try Cyber Projecting, if even just a little bit. First, let me explain a bit what I mean by the term “cyber projecting”. Everyone knows “astral projecting”- projecting your soul/astral self into the spiritual/astral plane where you can travel across the world, fly, cast potent magick, meet spirits and other mystical beings, etc- well, I’ve never been able to do it. Ever. I’ve tried so hard for years and it never works for me. But then one day, after I read a particularly well written and vivid account of astral projection somebody wrote, I realized I had my own version of astral projection…. Except instead of projecting my spirit into the astral plane, I projected my spirit into the digital plane. I literally project my consciousness into the internet/computer/video game. I get tunnel vision, focusing only on the screens, and feel like I’m not just sitting in my desk chair scrolling or typing but like I’m actually inside the internet interacting with things. Typing goes from a physical action to just my thoughts appearing as text through sheer force of my cyber projection. I feel physically and mentally inside the internet and computer with the freedom to skate from topic to topic, watch and read anything, and manipulate files/code/videos/music not through the commands of my keyboard/mouse but because I simply will it. I can sit nearly or even entirely dead still and navigate the internet and digital realm as if I was physically typing on the keyboard or moving the mouse. My spirit is literally in the digital realm, projected into cyberspace just as one’s soul might be into the spirit world through astral projection.
Much like astral projection, I don’t expect everyone to jump in and totally flawlessly pull it off on their first try. Try setting up your computer area like you would for astral projection- candle light or no light at all outside of the monitor, comfy pillows/sitting arrangement, ,incense, etc. You can try appropriate music if you want, but when I first started cyber projectiong I preferred to be able to hear the hum of my hardware working to get me projecting. Later on I added music that felt appropriate to the task. Sit before your monitors or your laptop and meditate. Focus on the whirr of the fans, the buzz of harddrives processing. Maybe try typing out a mantra or just whatever comes to you naturally and listening to the clicks and clacks of your keyboard. Focus on the screen(s) with such intensity that you feel yourself tunnel visioning into them. Then, just as you drag your spirit from your physical being into the astral realm, pull your spirit self into the digital realm. What do you do then, you ask? Anything you want. Surf the web like never before, game at whole new level, type up writing using your spirit and not your keys, the list of options, just like astral projecting, is endless. If you even partially achieve cyber projection, you will meet your computer’s spirit most definitely.

TechnoPagan Tips
Spells put into comments on your blog HTML
Use old keyboard keys to kickstart spells (the enter key and the delete key especially)
spell lightbulbs to clear away mental fog
spell your computer casing against unwanted eyes or spills
build a curse into a virus or a spell into an email attachment
bookmark sigils as java functions and ‘run’ them to activate
sigils as your computer background
instead of burying things you want destroyed, erase them or write over them using a shredder program

I don’t talk very much about tech-witchery here, but it’s one of the things that first drew me into witchcraft. So in that vein, here is a ‘USB magic wand’! Instead of carrying around a bag of witching stuff, it’s all here in one pocket-sized tool.
I chose to put images of crystals, candles, sigils and text files of prayers on my USB, but there are lots of possibilities! I imagine you could carry around an altar in your pocket if you were so inclined.
I’ve organised things into folders of 'I’m using this’ and “I’m not using this’. So on a day I want to have the effects of rose quartz with me, for example, I’d place it in the "using this” folder. If I decide I don’t need it anymore, it would go in the “not using this” next time I plug it into a computer.
Hopefully the wand-USB can be helpful to others, too!

🎵How To Do Shufflemancy🎵
a quick guide on my favorite type of divination, that’s simple and easy to do!
🎵 gather: yourself, your music collection, your question and a few moments.
optional:
crystals to boost energy and clarity - amethyst and citrine
incense to light the mood for heavy divining
🎵 you may want to charge the device you use for music with magical intent.
🎵 focus on your question, and come up with a number.
🎵 the number can be personally important, or can be the number of letters in the question, or number of words, etc.
🎵 go into a playlist, or your entire music collection, whichever you feel more appropriate.
🎵 hit shuffle, and then skip song the amount of times the number you chose
🎵 focus on your question and the divining energy during the skips.
🎵 listen to the song you land on, interpret the lyrics as your answer.
note:
🎵 like tarot and other divination forms, exact “yes” or “no” answers are harder to find. open ended questions are best.
🎵 if you create a specific playlist with only positive or negative songs, you may skew your results. shufflemancy can only work with what you give it

Instead of making sigils, write your intent down in binary code.
