This was taken in 1999 when bar end shifters were still popular among cyclocross racers for their simplicity and reliability. They were also less sensitive to crashes in comparison to modern intergrated ones. Gotta love the big, Turbolike saddle, Campagnolo Super Record seatpost, too.

"I believe this is a rather rare bike. A "vintage" Eddy Merckx Cyclocross. Bought as a bare frame with bad condition headset (noname) and BB (NR). I put on a NOS set of Mafac cantis just to see how it looks. This particular frame was built for a Dutch professional - Mr John Talen and his initials are stamped on the BB shell. Serial "P" - professional, "Z" - dates it to 1985, "9442" and "JT" -John Talen.
Will be restored with a new paint job in its original blue metallic (or maybe Faema - I have a soft spot for Faema), decals and period correct Campagnolo components - plus the Mafac cantis of course."

"This frame is part of a batch of frames built in 1984 by Alan on behalf of Colnago, exclusively for the Belgian cyclocross team MARC, where also Ronald Liboton raced. Liboton has been Cyclocross World champion in 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1984. Not all frames were used and this particular one has not even been unwrapped from its packaging where it slept for 30 years. Many years ago I found two of these frames, new, never assembled.
This frame is built according to the classical Alan tecnique with extruded aluminium tubes glued to aluminium microforged junctions. The junctions are made specifically for the exclusive Colnago “bitubo” design. The bottom bracket junction is engraved with Colnago’s typical “C” letter, and the name “Colnago” is engraved on the steering head junction and on the heads of the rear seat stays."
