Trying to Debunk Things the FFXIV Fandom Keeps Making Up About Lyse Hext

(Warning: Stormblood MSQ Spoilers Under the Cut)

I’ve been playing FFXIV for a few years now. It was my first time every playing a Final Fantasy game, and I was nervous I wouldn’t be any good at it. But FFXIV has been a huge comfort and highlight in my life. It’s gotten me through some very tough times and has really inspired me creatively. Not to mention I’ve met some really great people through the game, and that the community has so many nice and talented people.

But just like any other fandom, things are far from always perfect. There are fans who engage in offensive and gross behavior, fans who are toxic about how to best play - there are plenty of issues this fandom has that most of us are already aware of. But one thing that I think about a lot - although it’s far from the only thing - is the strange amount of malice certain fans display when talking about the character Lyse Hext.

I’ve been seeing a lot of negativity...

Specifically surrounding limited White Rose moments in V7, so I’m going to take a sec to appreciate my favorite little ones we’ve had so far, because honestly? They’ve been super cute ❤️💙

Episode 1: (1) Ruby’s reaction to Weiss dunking the trash into the trash can, and (2) Weiss’s look of concern/fear for Ruby upon getting captured

Episode 2: (1) WR leaning forward to look at each other around 3 (three!) of their teammates, and (2) Weiss’s possessive spinny thing

Episode 3: (1) the little look they give each other before opening their weapons boxes, and (2) watching each other’s backs in the mines

Episode 4: (1) Ruby focusing entirely on supporting Weiss while ignoring J*queass, and (2) the Meaningful™️ look they exchange after being promoted

Episode 5: Being adorable on their first official mission (and also choosing to team up-just the two of them- for their first ever mission as huntresses)

Episode 6: (1) Helping each other train, and (2) Weiss falling asleep on Ruby (even before Blake falls over onto Yang)

Episode 7: (1) Weiss worrying about Ruby worrying about Penny, and (2) Ruby encouraging Weiss’s suspicions/deductions about her father

Episode 8: Ruby’s concern for Weiss when Whitley comments on Klein (she is the only one who seems to register that Weiss would be upset by the info)

Episode 9: Weiss immediately grounding Ruby and herself when a grim attacks the airship, and Ruby’s look of surprise at how remarkably quickly that reflex was

Episode 10 is the first this volume that there’s not a sweet moment between them, which is really amazing given everything going on in v7. I mean, Weiss finally has her sister back and is dealing with so much family trauma, Ruby just found out Penny’s alive and has a huge amount of trauma around that, and that’s just their personal stuff. So I really appreciate how many little moments the writers and animators have squeezed in despite how packed the plot is. It makes me feel like their relationship really matured a lot in V6, and I absolutely love how quietly supportive they are of each other this volume! ❄️ 🌹

After volume 6, we were all hyped for volume 7 to be the WhiteRose volume, but instead we were met with disappointment with their lack of interaction.

But you know what?

That’s okay.

Because although we aren’t getting what we hoped for, at least we as a fandom can come together and share our work. We can create what the show failed to do and make something EVEN better.

From day 1, we were always faced with the possibility of it not being canon, yet we still shipped it and enjoyed what we were given. Now is no different.

Keep pushing on and creating what you want to create. Write, draw and edit to your heart’s content.

No matter what, we’ll always have each other. And that, I assure you, is a canon fact.

All things considered, I’m just gonna ship it harder.

Despite everything that happened last episode, I don’t think it’s fair to bully Rosegarden over a harmless scene where Ruby and Oscar came to the same conclusion to tell Ironwood the truth.

True they’ll be some who will boast about it being canon romantically, but that doesn’t mean we have to go after them. There are those who must understand why some are upset over it, do not forget Whiterose was the first ship in this fandom so it’s somewhat understandable.

So instead of getting annoyed at Rosegarden I urge my fellow Whiteroses to continue creating art and stories, share it and appreciate what we do have for now. I will always have faith in Whiterose even till the end, they may have a garden but a white rose will always stand out amongst the rest.
