Timeline of and Theories for Sarah J Maas’s Universe
This is my compilation of information on how all of Maas’s books are connected and some conclusions/theories I drew from the information.
Please note that all page numbers were taken from hardback versions of the three books from which quotes were taken, so page numbers may not be the same in the paperback versions.
A Court of Thorns and Roses Series (Prythian)
- The Fae were once ruled by a race called the Daglan who fed on magic and over 15,000 years before the events of ACOTR. The Fae rebelled against their oppressors over 15,000 years prior to ACOTR and become the dominant species.
~ “The Fae were not the first masters of this world. According to our oldest legends, most now forgotten, we were created by beings who were near-gods – and monsters. The Daglan. They ruled for millennia, and enslaved us and the humans. They were petty and cruel and drank the magic of the land like wine” (Maas, ACOSF, 554)
- There were hints that there were four items in the Dread Trove in ACOSF
~ “A fourth object lay on the altar, veiled in shadow. But she couldn’t make out more than a gleam of age worn bone -” (Maas, ACOSF, 548)
- The sword Gwydion disappeared around the same time as the Dread Trove, about 15,000 years prior to ACOTR
~ ““No one has been able to create a magic sword in more than ten thousand years,” Amren said. “The last one Made, the great blade Gwydion, vanished around the time the last of the Trove went missing” (Maas, ACOSF, 443)
- Gwydion was lost due to the machinations of the High King’s wife and top general
~ “It had belonged to a true Fae High King in Prythian, as there had been in Hybern. He had united the lands, its people – and for a while, with that sword, peace had reigned. Until he had been betrayed by his own queen and fiercest general, and lost the sword to them, and the lands fell into darkness once more” (Maas, ACOSF, 443)
~ ACOSF 554-555
- During the events of A Court of Silver Flames, a red shooting star appears on Starfall. Feyre and Rhysand act a bit strange after seeing it
~ “The mood hadn’t been helped by a rare red star blasting across the sky one day - an ill omen, Nesta had heard the priestesses muttering. Cassian reported that even Rhys had been rattled by it, seeming unusually contemplative afterward” (Maas, ACOSF, 634)
Throne of Glass Series (Erilea)
- At the end of Kingdom of Ash, Aelin travels through multiple realms while trying to get back to her own after sending the gods back to their home planet
- Two that she passes through are Midgard (Crescent City) and Prythian (ACOTR).
~ “She passed through a world where a great city had been built along the curve of a river, the buildings impossibly tall and glimmering with lights” (Maas, KoA 800)
~ “She passed through a world of snowcapped mountains … But it slowed her. That winged male’s power slowed her, just enough” (Maas, KoA, 800 - 801)
Crescent City Series (Midgard)
- All of the Vanir originated on different planets and that they colonized Midgard 15000 years ago
- The shifters are actually Fae that have an animal form
~ “The Midgard shifter were Fae from a different planet. All the Fae in that world shared their form with an animal” (Maas, HoSaB, 762)
- The Asteri used to rule the Fae of Midgard on their home planet but were usurped 1000 years before Midgard’s colonization,
- The winged races of that original world were angel prototypes
~ “Your ancestors wielded the Horn and another Fae object that allowed them to enter this world. Stolen, of course, from their original masters - our people. Our people, who built fearsome warriors in that world to be their army. All of them prototypes for the angels in this one. And all of them traitors to their creators, joining the Fae to overthrow my brothers and sisters a thousand years before we arrived in Midgard” (Maas, HoSaB, 761)
- The land the Midgardian Fae hail from is described as very similar to Prythian
~ “Not your kind of Fae of course - your breed swelled in a lovely, verdant land, rich with magic. If it’s of any interest to you, your Starborn bloodline specifically hailed from a small isle. a few miles from the mainland. And while the mainland had all manner of climes, the isle existed in beautiful, near-permanent twilight” (Maas 762)
- It is possible to travel to different worlds with the Horn
- The Starsword is Gwydion
~ “The knife could have been the twin of the Starsword: black hilted and bladed. It was its twin. The Starsword began to hum within its sheath, glittering white light leaking from where leather met the dark hilt. The dagger - The male dropped the dagger to the plush carpet. All of them retreated as it flared with dark light, as if in answer. Alpha and Omega. “Gwydion,” the dark-haired female whispered, indicating the Starsword” (Maas, HoSaB, 796)
Conclusions/Theories
- The Fae of Midgard are descended from the Fae of Prythian that travelled to Midgard 15,000 years prior to the events of ACOTR, 1,000 years after overthrowing the Aster/Daglani.
- The Starborn Fae are descendants of Night Court High Fae.
- Luna’s Horn is the fourth object in the Dread Trove
- The queen and general that stole Gwydion and killed the Fae High King was Prince Pelias and Queen Theia, and they brought Luna’s Horn and some of their people to Midgard when given the opportunity by the Asteri/Daglan
- The Midgardian Fae prophecy about greatness/victory for the Fae when sword and dagger are reunited refers to the Starsword/Gwydion and Truth Teller, Azriel’s dagger
- The Shifters of Midgard are descendants of Fae originally from Erilea that crossed over 15,000 years prior to the events of Throne of Glass. Note that this is 14,000 years before the first wars between the Valg and the Fae
- The events of A Court of Silver Flames and Kingdom of Ash occur within the same year.

Why would SJM make Az want a mate so badly and then give him a mate and make her evil?
Why would SJM give Nesta two sisters-in-arms only to make one of them evil?
And all this just so E/riel can be together? It's just not worth it.
Az deserves a mate and Gwyn deserves a male who will love her unconditionally.

Nesta might be "mean," but just remember that she was willing to move to Prythian for Elain's safety, even though she hated the Fae.

You know what, I'm gonna come right out and say it.
We've been absolutely robbed of the Autumn Court politics. Give me Eris Vanserra working to get his father off that throne. Give me the scheming and the plotting within the court. Show me how Lady Autumn really feels about her husband. Give me the ambiguity of which Vanserra brothers can be trusted. Give me something.

Unpopular Opinion
I literally don't have any stake in ElainxAzriel or GwynxAzriel.
I trust that SJM will deliver something that makes sense and will remind me of how much I love reading her books.
I get the ships and with every fandom there is a ship war and by all means have at it. This post is not to persuade any of the fighting to stop or to change minds. This is more my own ranting.
I just want to see the characters. I want to see more of Azriel. I want to see Elain come into her own character and her own power. I want to see much, much more of Gwyn.
So whatever happens happens and I'll be happy regardless. ♥️

I can understand not liking Nesta, but to hate her to such an extent that you disregard canon and how incredibly powerful she is/was is a little ridiculous.
Rhys could barely control Nesta when she was sleeping and only using a fraction of her power.
Nesta is the first and only person in fifteen thousand years to Make a magical object, and she Made three.
She is the only person the Dread Trove will answer to.
She's the only person to have a connection with the Mother.
Yes, Nesta has god-like powers and you cannot refute that just because she's "mean" and you don't like her.

House of Sky And Breath Theories (contain Spoilers)
sooo i just finished hosab and let me say it was so fucking amazingggg! while reading i got a few new theories about the worlds of crescent city, acotar and throne of glass
DO NOT - AND I MEAN IT - DO NOT READ IT IF YOU DON´T WANT TO SEE/READ ABOUT THE SPOILERS!!!!
Amren is the 7th lost Asteri sister - They say that the Prince of the Pit swallowed the 7th Asteri, Sirius, whole, but what if he didn't? Perhaps she didn't like what the Asteri stood for, and the swallowing was a method of dragging her into Prythian - "No one has spoken that language in this world for fifteen thousand years" is quoted by Amren when Bryce first speaks to her in HOSAB...interesting that the 7th Asteri sister was swallowed by the prince of pit 15,000 years ago - to me the timelines match up - I know Amren doesn't feed on first light, but she does drink blood...something of power in itself, taken unwillingly - She is said to be a powerful creature of unknown origins, but that doesn't mean that she isn't Asteri. They have chosen angel like bodies but that's not to say they true form is any different to what Amren was before she chose to be put in a fae body -> Could be grasping for straws here but it feels RIGHT
Ruhn looks like Rhys - are they related? - are Rhy's ancestors part of the original fae that went to Lunathion? After all, Theia and "her people were already in Lunathion" when the Asteri arrived (see next bullet to explore this) -> Funny how we don't know Rhys' last name. Could it possibly be... DANAAN?
Bryce and Ruhn's ancestors came from Prythian and ultimately, to the original world of the Fae - Rigelus mentions that Bryce's breed of fae came from a "verdant land, rich and magic". When Bryce lands in Prythian...what type of grass does she land on? "Verdant grass". - Rigelus mentions that Bryce's star of her chest is a "beacon to the world from which the Fae originally came" and that it will lead them back to that world..interesting that Bryce wanted to go to Hel, but ended up in Prythian
Theia came from the lost Dusk court / the Dusk court plays into it somehow -> Danika's project is called Dusk's Truth...coincidence? I think not.
Throne of Glass and Erilea are going to play into this cross over some how - Rigelus mentions that the wolves/shifters are fae but not from where Bryce's type of fae are from...but he does mention that they all came from a different planet where "all the Fae in that world shared their form with an animal" and they perhaps at one stage, "shared a world with [Bryce's breed of Fae" -> I can't keep a certain fae hawk, mountain lion and wolf out of my head - ToG has witches to...perhaps they also went through a rift to Lunathion -> SJM will have us ToG fans beating down her door if she doesn't do a crossover with our fav characters - it's happening and I refuse to believe otherwise
The horn is the fourth trove I´m so fucking sure about it now (had this theorie since the first cc book but now i´m just so sure about it)
Hunt is somehow related to Thurr? - I mean we ALL thought that the underking was Hunts father, but that theory is kind of dead in the water. Guy is an asshole and there was no recognition there - Bryce mentions many times he looks like Thurr, and his powers are similar...how are they connected? Son? Grandson? Timelines are unclear
Rifts are everywhere throughout SJM's books - does a lot of passing happen between worlds more than we are aware? I know Theia and her daughters figured out where all the rifts were in Lunathion, promptly closing them, but that doesn't mean there aren't rifts still open in our other favorite worlds...meaning crossing can happen a lot more easily than we think It would explain a lot of cross-over between linage and missing characters showing up in other SJM series
What do you think about these?

48 hours since I finished house of sky and breath and nothing has eased the feeling this book left me in, not even the book I'm reading right now (that supposedly was going to help me cope, but I'm a blubbering mess and keep crying over the most simple scenes, but anyway).
Sarah put some kind of drug in this one, as someone already said it in this website. And my friend, I couldn't agree more.

Still can't believe it's been three weeks since I finished hosab and nothing has ever felt the same as before. I don't remember how my life was before this book, and even the books I'm reading just feel kind of odd, somehow.
Sarah J. Maas completely wrecked me once again, and she can do it whenever she likes it because she's allowed to do that.

I know people say not to take it personally when fictional characters are hated on, but when Nesta Archeron is the literary character you connect to the most since you started reading books in elementary school...that's a little hard to do. Especially when she's such a misunderstood character.
