HQs or spending their free time TRAVELING, PLAYING GOLF & YOGA. supposedly, they’ve come to palmetto bay TO TAKE CHARGE OF THE FAMILY’S BUSINESS AND EXPAND THEIR FACILITIES. on the night of the murder, they were supposedly SEEN LEAVING A BUSINESS MEETING AT THE PURPLE SQUID but who knows if that’s true or not.
THE STORY.
tw: alcohol and drugs abuse, death
When one hears the name Sterling, their mind instantly connects it with Sterling Inc, one of the biggest oil companies in America. Charles Sterling established the company in his twenties, and his son, Campbell Sterling, sat in the big CEO chair as soon as he finished college. Soon after, Campbell met his future wife Meredith, and together they had Cyrus, a loud but charming boy that no one could resist. Born and raised in Chicago, Cyrus’ parents spoiled him, but at the same time they remained very strict throughout his upbringing, especially when it came to his education. It was expected of Cyrus to be an excellent student so eventually he’d be able to get into an Ivy League school. Many things were expected of the future CEO of Sterling Inc, but the hardest of it all was the expectation of him becoming his father.
As much as Cyrus loved his dad, they couldn’t have been more different. While Campbell was intimidating, uptight and all business, Cyrus was outgoing, approachable and always up for a good time. As a teenager, he would always look forward to the end of the week so he could attend a bunch of parties with his friends, but since his parents would not let him without getting something in return, Cyrus made them a deal: as long as he got good grades, they would let him let loose every now and then. But for someone growing up in Chicago, letting loose meant underage drinking and experimenting with light drugs. He didn’t make an effort to hide this from his parents in any way, because they knew that as soon as his rebellious and reckless phase passed, Cyrus would start turning into a man and evolve into someone deserving of the CEO seat on his family’s company. And that right there was the catch: Cyrus never had a say in whether or not he wanted to take over the company when the time came, it was simply expected of him, considering he was the only heir-apparent of the Sterling family. If it were to come down between any of his two younger sisters, Cyrus knew his father would have picked most likely his acting COO instead. He would often joke that he felt as if he was bred to be king, and his father would look at him straight-faced and say, “No, you are bred to lead one of the biggest oil companies in the world. The stakes are much higher than those of carrying a little tiara on your head.”
Back then, Cyrus didn’t really understand the meaning of his father’s words, but today he certainly does.
Even with all of his partying and reckless behavior, Cyrus still graduated high school with the perfect GPA and got into Princeton university. The next four years of his life were only an upgraded version of Cyrus’ life in every way. He studied harder, but he also partied better, with the best and brightest of his generation. To this day, there are memories from drunken nights that Cyrus does not remember, faces of countless girls who are nothing but a blur in his mind.
His last name constantly opened new doors for him and gave him opportunities that not many experience in their lifetime, and Cyrus took all of it for granted. At one point, Cyrus got lost among all of those pleasures in life. He became materialistic and shallow, and the influence his friends had on him only made things worse. They encouraged his behavior even further, but at the end of the day, Cyrus only had himself to blame. He became notorious in the media for being a party boy and completely pushing away his family’s tradition, and people often said how all the Sterling ancestors must’ve been turning in their graves every time Cyrus Sterling did something scandalous.
He had lost his way; he had no idea who he was anymore, but there was one thing Cyrus was absolutely sure of: he did not want to take over his father’s company. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life, but it certainly wasn’t that. Cyrus wanted to take some time off, to figure out his true passion, to explore the world. So he dropped out of university six months before graduating, knowing fully well that his parents were going to have a breakdown over it once they heard. As expected, they were utterly disappointed with him, and Cyrus’ father went as far as to take away his trust fund. If he had no interest in being a Sterling, then he wouldn’t get any of the perks that came with it. Every day after that was a lecture about how Cyrus was not good enough, that he was an embarrassment to the family, that he was taking everything in his life for granted.
Perhaps they were right, because Cyrus didn’t feel like he was his father’s son. He saw himself as the black sheep of the family, and whether that was his own fault or the outcome of many other factors, it was irrelevant. The only thing that mattered was that he felt out of place. The decision to leave everything behind him wasn’t a spontaneous one, because it had been a long time coming, but the day Cyrus packed his bags and left his home, his parents and his fake friends behind would be a day he’d never forget.
He lived as a nomad for a few months, passing state after state and living a simple life – something that was unusual and new for Cyrus. He had barely any money left, but for the first time, he didn’t care. He was in search of a new home, or perhaps of himself, he wasn’t sure. One day, sitting at a café in Connecticut, Cyrus received a call from his family’s lawyer. At first, he wasn’t going to pick up, but when his phone refused to stop ringing, Cyrus answered it, ready to dismiss the poor man that was most likely ordered by his parents to threaten Cyrus about something, perhaps regarding his inheritance, unless he returned home. Looking back, he would’ve given anything for that to be the topic of their conversation, because the news that Cyrus received instead was absolutely devastating. Campbell and Meredith Sterling had died in a tragic accident after their private jet had crashed on European soil merely six hours prior, and Cyrus was the first to find out before anyone from the media. The family lawyer requested his presence back in Chicago as quickly as possible, and Cyrus did not have to be asked twice. The time between him receiving the call and burying his parents in the ground was a complete blur.
All that Cyrus remembers of that time is feeling absolutely hollow, as if something had been carved out of his chest and then stitched back up and expected to behave like a human being again. He had had many issues with his parents, but never, not even when he was at his worst, would Cyrus have wished to ever lose his parents. Suddenly, he and his two sisters were orphans, but that wasn’t even the worst part. He was also the new CEO of Sterling Inc. as requested in Campbell’s will. Even in death, it seemed, Cyrus’s father was planning out his future. He refused to give up on his one and only boy, and that’s what truly made Cyrus crack. He remembered the last few words he had exchanged with his parents, and to say they had been cruel would be an understatement.
Despite his broken heart, the sleepless nights and all the burdens on his shoulders, Cyrus had no choice but to pick himself up and behave like the man his father had believed he could be. He put on one of his many Armani suits, stepped into his father’s office that now had Cyrus’s name on the door, and took over the company as if he had been born for it. But the mask he puts on every day when he wakes up is far from who Cyrus truly is. He misses being free and reckless, he misses traveling miles and miles on his bike in an attempt to find himself, but most of all, he misses his parents. Campbell and Meredith Sterling died almost eight years ago, but they still haunt Cyrus to this day.
He has been named one of the most influential people by Forbes for the work he’s been doing with Sterling Inc., he has money, power and the world at his fingertips, but recent events might put an stop to his ambitions. Kimberly Ngguyen’s disappearance came as a shock, but not a tragedy. She’d been but an obstacle to Cyrus, and with her out of the way, Sterling Inc. could conduct all the methodically legal and harmless mining she was so adamantly against. It never occurred to him that some people might be looking towards him with suspicious eyes; he had a lot to gain from having Kimi out of the way, after all.
PERSONALITY.
Charismatic – Cyrus, simply put, could sell vegetables to a farmer. He has the charisma and charm to make people around him want to stay there. At parties and events, he is a man that people naturally gravitate toward. He enjoys the attention and he enjoys knowing that people enjoy being around him, though it can take its toll when he’s already spread so thin.
Perfectionist – Cyrus gives his all to everything and refuses to “rubber stamp” anything when it comes to his company or his personal life. Whether it’s hours spent in the conference room with his executive board or hours spent picking out birthday gifts for his sisters, Cyrus expects nothing less than perfection from himself. He has learned, over time, that he cannot expect such things from others, however.
Elitist – while Cyrus knows the importance of showing respect to everyone, he’s a bit of an elitist. Coming from old money, he’s grown up quite differently from the nouveau riche and considers himself above it.
Sarcastic – Cyrus has quite a sarcastic streak. Though he’s usually able to couple his sarcasm with charisma, it doesn’t always happen that way. When he offends someone with his sarcasm, however, he usually jokes with the fact that he’s the oldest son because it’s easier than apologizing for that part of himself.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
Best Friend - Some might think they are an unlikely combination, but they actually have a lot in common. They both avoid the spotlight as much as they can and prefer to lead quiet lives (even is sometimes, Cyrus still misses the good, old days when his only worry was what party to attend next) and both their lives have changed dramatically over the last few years. They share a bond that consists of mutual understanding and unconditional loyalty, and Cyrus thanks his lucky stars every single day that he has someone like them in his life, someone who is honest, genuine and a real friend.
Ex-partner in crime - Once upon a time, Cyrus and them were partners in crimes. They would wreak havoc around the city together, challenge each other, support each other’s terrible ideas that would always end up with one of them laughing at the other. All of that changed when Cyrus' parents died and he became the new CEO of his family company.
Frenemies - Perhaps it’s their personalities that clash, but Cyrus and them have never been able to get along over the years. They both run in the same circles but they’ve always avoided each other as much as they can which has more often than not been the topic of many gossip tabloids.
Crush - It’s hard for Cyrus to make time for relationships. For this reason, he has been avoiding love for as long as he remembers, his only excitement being the occasional one-night stands that never mean anything. Truthfully, Cyrus has always preferred it that way, at least before he met them. They have captivated Cyrus from the moment they met, but he has yet to act on his feelings. The only thing stopping him is the fear that he cannot dedicate himself to a serious relationship, because if Cyrus has to choose between love and the company, he will always choose the latter.
Sisters (25/28) - The drastic differences between them are what make them love each other all that much more. It was their parents' death that brought them together after all these years Cyrus spent traveling and avoiding them. Hes not nearly the older brother he knows they would like him to be, and while he tries to be around with expensive birthday gifts and a casual text message during the christmas festivities, he doesn't feel he knows how to reach out to them after he fell into this dark hole of misery.
