Oscar Masotta gave a talk titled "After Pop, We Dematerialize" in Buenos Aires in 1967. Scholars and curators have demonstrated that Masotta's thesis sums up the path he charted for the Argentine avant-garde, steering it away from the global discourses of Happenings and Pop art and toward a dematerialized art that made use of mass media technology. The 1960s saw the global creation of happenings, avant-garde performances that eschewed the tangible tools of painting and sculpture in favor of an immediate, fleeting, and highly chaotic aesthetic.
