#hmmm so this is becoming a philological problem#since we don't have the original manuscript we have to gauge what could be the probable reading#slug would be a lectio facilior i.e. the easier reading bc it fits the context + it makes sense and it's the safer option#slut would be a lectio difficilior i.e. the more difficult reading bc it fits the context + but you strain to reconcile the charged meaning#with the overall context and you have to look for obscure meanings to justify this reading#and usually if you have to go to such lengths to defend a complicated reading without having the original text you usually write the simpler#reading and put the more complicated one on a footnote with explanations#next step would be doing a paleographic study of t and g in Lawrence's letters to try to guess what could be the most probable writing
