chat do we think i can convince my state government/dcs that reading aftg counts as foster care training hours
#i need 30 hours for relicensing#and every 100 pages of a “foster care or parenting related book” is one hour#so aftg would put a good dent in that i feel like#i think it would be good#i could argue it fsfs#all for the game#aftg#the foxhole court#andrew minyard#nora sakavic#neil josten#the sunshine court

robin swift. no i don’t have the right to live when those better than me could not. but i have a responsibility to them all the same. survival is a war of attrition and i am clinging on by my fingernails. i want to let go. i hope death is nothingness because i am tired of grieving. the identity i belong to was forged in the crevices of my mother’s final breath. i want to go home. i can never go home. i must fight for a home i lost to myself. no i don’t have the right to live and no i don’t really want to. but my death has to mean something for their deaths to have meant something. if this is the final chapter it is up to me to make sure it’s written well. it’s up to me to make sure each word means what they would need it to mean. if this is the final chapter i will go out in a flurry of cascading silver, and the last thing i will see will be the sun. no i don’t have the right to live and no i don’t have the courage to go on. but i have a friend and i have an army and they have both. no i don’t have the right to live but maybe, if i try hard enough, i could have the right to die

sometimes i make posts like 'aaron minyard deserves to kill' which he does but then i backtrack and remember that he actually shares a podium with ichirou moriyama and stuart hatford as the only AFTG characters to ever kill someone onscreen, and i get this sudden burst of pride like "that's my boy!!"

the most fucked thing about people being offended by it to me is that it almost always is centered around "a ton of poor people in London probably died" which is like, a fair critique. but the problem with saying that is the alternative is a ton of people from all socioeconomic classes dying and/or being enslaved (then dying) in China. the text literally pits the lives of white people in the aggressor country against the lives of poc in the country the aggressor is trying to oppress and somehow people still say "a lot of people died, so robin bad :( and story bad/immoral". like bro yes. and the london government could have stopped what they were doing at any point in time but the death of their people was less important then their greed. the whole book is an argument for violence. that sometimes strikes and money and debate and anything else isn't enough to stop evil people because colonizers don't see other people as people. that slavery and colonialism and imperialism are all despotic and can never produce anything other than harm and evil and oppression and death. that there can never be freedom inside of such a system. and sometimes the only thing you can to do to stop it is to blow it up.
saying Babel lacks nuance is absolutely ABSURD. there are strong anti-colonial themes in the book but that's not its primary message, believe it or not.
the title is literally "Babel: or the necessity of violence" THAT IS THE MAIN THEME OF THE BOOK. THE NECESSITY OF VIOLENCE
the story centers on Robin, who grapples with complex internal struggles as a person of color, essentially kidnapped by the British to study and serve the British Empire, despite being originally from China. it's about his ongoing internal moral debate on whether to continue serving the empire or to oppose it.
the book doesn't ask, "Is colonialism bad?" because the answer is obvious: OF COURSE IT IS. That's why R.F. Kuang doesn't give it nuance—it doesn't deserve it.
it seems that those who dislike the book are just offended by its blatant anti-colonial stance and if that's the case, you need to seriously reevaluate your perspectives.
