Intro: This is my life drawing portfolio for my last semester as a year one BCT student at Media Design School. This portfolio was thirteen of my favorite pieces of the 30+ that I accumulated during our three hour intervals on Wednesday. I thought to initially add them all, however, decided it may be easier for the marker to just see my best! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gestures & flow - To show posture, form and movement through simple lines and shapes. Drawn in 30 second intervals. Aim: I aimed to capture the proportion, posture and flow in my gesture drawings. I found it very challenging at first (bottom left, group 1) to capture these aspects in 30 seconds however feel that I have improved over the duration of this class. I still have much to learn in this field however and will keep improving my technique on adding more weight while preserving proportions of the model.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anatomy - To show accurate proportion as well as placement of muscle groups, head, feet, hands etc.
Aim: In my anatomy study I aimed to draw the models porportion accurately and then added further rendering in terms of muscle and other definitions. We began with box forms which I attempted to capture the angle of the pose through 3D shapes. I feel that it was somewhat successful, however, it is obvious that I need to work on my perspective with 3D shapes more.  For the thumbnails the aim was to isolate the more difficult parts of the body, i.e. the hands and feet, and to add extra detail to try accurately capture how they looked at the time. The full poses were drawn with the intention of capturing accurate proportion and anatomy in a full scale drawing. The man was my first drawing and the woman I did a few weeks later.  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Light & Shading - To show how light influences shading on the body.
Aim: In these studies my aim was to accurately show how light (natural and unnatural) influences shading on the body (Although hard to see after scanned). These were typically 10-30 mins in length. In the unnaturally lit images I drew a light source to show the angle that it comes in from.  I also added some images of the clothed drawing that we did as I feel that it was my stronger point and helped me improve my shading skills.

Tradition Art - final creative piece.
About - For the final piece I wanted to do something not only that I enjoy but that is relevant to the course. This piece is the result of that. I call him Bjorn the Master of Malt who is a hypothetical support class for a 2D side-scroller, distributing ales and brews to allies in battle.
Note - Bjorn is a dwarf, meaning that his proportions are not the same as a human, therefore he has stockier features and a bigger head. The barrel is overemphasized to suit Bjorn’s burly stature and strength.
Style -  I am a huge fan of bold line-work which shows through my drawing. I started by doing a light sketch of what I wanted before going over it with a 2B, this was followed by the shading and then I applied 4B lines again to emphasize them as the blending pencil has removed some of the weight & value.
I imagined the light source coming from the top right corner and although shading is not my strong point I decided to apply what I had learned from life drawing in order to improve. To do so I added more value to the areas opposite of the light source where cloth and skin would cover.

Hello all as a part of my semester-long intro to game design and programming I have produced a small, top-down, 2D brawler called 'Death by Metal'. As a part of my marketing paper I am doing a shameless plug on social media!
Download it for free from Gamejolt or Itch.io and feel free to leave a comment.
Available on: Windows GameJolt: http://gamejolt.com/games/DeathbyMetal/264328 Itch.io: https://rookster.itch.io/death-by-metal
Cheers!

Top left: Gray-scale tonal study. Floral pudding For my tonal I chose to set up a small, metal pudding bowl with two flowers and a flower bud facing at all different angles to capture different angles of light. I wanted to flowers in a metal bowl as this allows me to try my hand at rendering multiple materials using value. I set it up using natural light rather than using photo reference. Here I attempted to capture the shadows and reflections of light using only tints of black and white. I found the tonal study the most challenging out of all my paint studies as it is hard to capture the correct perspective, light and colour using only shades. Top right: Colour study. Fructose palette For the colour study I set up a small ceramic dining plate with three types of fruit. Kiwifruit, banana and grapes are present here. I chose these differing fruit as each skin has a different texture and interacts differently with light as well as having their own unique colours. The kiwifruit with it’s dark tones had reflection from the plate causing it to have the majority of it’s highlights at the bottom whereas the thick banana skin did not. The grapes had highlights towards their center due to the natural light from the windows. The direct light caused hard edges around each object which is why I had not attempted to blend the shade with the white of the plate.
Center bottom: Creative piece. The Ivy House
Wanting to try my hand at painting a landscape I headed out towards the local park and found a nice ivy-covered building and snapped an image to use as a reference knowing I couldn’t complete the painting all in one afternoon. I am most happy with the bush in the bottom left corner as I feel that I had most accurately captured the shape and highlights on the leaves with a mixture of short brush dabs on a dark burnt-umber underlay. To separate the background and foreground I smothered the background images in a watered white to give it the illusion of distance; The sky was very bright that day and therefore it drowned the background scenery in white. To the right of the building were lush red leaves which were highlighted by the light that day which gave it a much different look than that of the ivy. The tree left much to be desired, I attempted to give it a wiry, unruly look with short, thin brush-strokes however I would have tackled this differently after the experience, perhaps less is more here. All-in-all it was an enjoyable experience.

Some still-life images were captured then hand drawn as a demonstration of what I have learned in the first few months of taking traditional art classes. The art is far from perfect although my work has shown myself that I am improving very fast.  Thumbnails: I did one in pen and another in pencil in order to improve in both areas. I prefer pen to pencil however find it much harder to define the material I am drawing. For the two thumbnails I had decided to arrange certain items of different materials in my room to test composition and lighting and did a quick sketch. At first this was meant to lead into my creative in a different way however I was later inspired to try something else. Tonals: For the tonals I chose items of varying material in order to further understand how to shade them. For my first time attempting pewter and glass I feel as though I did quite well to reflect lighting and reflection, however, there is still much to improve on. For the pen tonals I am most proud of the wooden hilt and the guitar strings as I try to look at this work with the scope of “does this look like realistic material?”. Creative: For my final piece I decided that instead of arranging and drawing a life-like canvas I would equip that which I had drawn previously and have my partner take a still photograph of me posing with it. This inspired me to pay more attention to this piece as it was something I could get behind and enjoy drawing. I used the malleable rubber a lot to lighten very dark areas which needed light/reflection as my base shading skills are average at best.  To finish off the piece and add depth I added a basic background of items in my room.
