Nope! That's not the excited face of Dad grabbing his plate of a gourmet meal. Nope! That's Dad's excited face over hot dogs & macaroni & cheese!!! LOL! Ugh!
I swear, my culinary skills have really declined when I realized this dude will eat ANYTHING! I am truly blessed to not have to deal with a picky eater! When it's late & I've done so much, & I literally have forgotten we haven't eaten? Sandwiches! Hot dogs! Turkey burgers! Hahaha
My go to meal for Dad though is whole wheat pasta, with a sauce, & a protein cooked in, & veggies on the side. It's quick. It's easy. It lasts for a few days!
For me? I try to stick to a lower carb option & will do fish/chicken & veggies, etc. Dad would even be happy with that!
Instead of complaining that he puts hot dogs on a higher scale than steak, I have learned to embrace that awesomeness and relax when it's time for dinner.
We try to keep it healthy most of the time - but every now and again? ;)

"Misusing" "Free Time"
Dad goes to his Day Center on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. I deem that as my "free time". I truly dislike doing household chores during said "free time", but OH MY GOODNESS, it is so much easier to do laundry & clean around this place when he's not here!
Laundry Example: We're in an apartment building, so the laundry room is down the hall. The act of locking the door behind me, & unlocking the door when I get back is so miniscual when you think about it, but SO freeing when you don't have to do it!
I mean, think about it; I'm lugging 2 loads of laundry out the door + detergent + bleach + my laundry card. I put all that down, turn around to lock the door, put the keys & cellphone in my pocket, pick the stuff back up, head down to the laundry room, do the laundry, set my timer, come back, get key out, unlock the door, go in, lock the door.
When Dad's not here? I lug 2 loads of laundry out the door + detergent + bleach + my laundry card. I head down to the laundry room, do the laundry, set my timer, come back, go in, lock the door.
I mean, the simple math is right there! hahaha :)
Ok - my timer just went off. Time to go do another load! ;)

Dad fidgets! A lot!
While riding in the car, he'll play with his pants legs & tissues. He always has to be doing "something" :)

Conversation
As frustrating & unrewarding as it can feel to be his caregiver, moments like these are what make it all worthwhile :)
Me: Dad, can you brush your teeth for me?
Dad: I sure can! That's the least I can do for all that you do for me!

This photo was taken August 1, 2009. My mom was in the hospital. I was driving around any & everywhere just trying to keeping Dad busy & occupied. I was brand new to this caregiver thing at that time;)
