#34: Mako and Bolin Find Their Family (K303, "The Earth Queen"/K304, "In Harm's Way")

From their first appearance as pro-bending teammates, our writers made it clear that Mako and Bolin were meant to be symbolic of the new multicultural reality of the Avatarverse, especially in the United Republic. But when they take a little side trip (and stumble, and fall) in Ba Sing Se and end up crossing paths with the Earth Kingdom side of their family, we find out exactly where in their background that strain of xenophilia comes from.

It seems that most of their miraculously rediscovered relatives—Cousin Tu, Uncle Chow, and Grandma Yin, among many others—are true-blue earthbenders. They’re proud of their toughness, their family fruit stand (however disgusting Mako may find it), and their endurance of Lower Ring living conditions that make Republic City look like paradise. And, rough life or no, they—or at least their eldest, most respected member—are absolutely loyal to the Earth Kingdom and its queen. 

The only oddball, as Grandma Yin explains, was Mako and Bolin’s father San, who fought with his own father, left home for the excitement of Republic City, and married a Fire Nation girl… whose name he apparently didn’t bother to mention even in his letter to his parents. :P (Still hoping for a few more answers about her, especially if Book 4 includes a trip to the Fire Nation!)

The scene where they read their father’s letter, see their one family portrait, and leave Grandma Yin with a final (pleasantly color-contrasting) memento of her lost son is touching. But if there’s one thing the brothers learn from all this, it’s what makes them different and why they could never stay in Ba Sing Se, no matter how warm the welcome—and it has little to do with living conditions, since they’ve experienced far worse in Republic City.

It’s because Mako and Bolin are living evidence of change and the way the lines between nations are blurring, even if things are forced to stay the same in Ba Sing Se. As Mako implies when he mentions Korra, their mission is to help the Avatar as she works to manage that change for the good of everyone.

For now, San’s family accepts the boys extremely readily, especially when you consider the sheer number of people they already have to squeeze a tiny apartment. When Ba Sing Se falls to the Red Lotus, they’ll all have this chance encounter to thank for saving their lives.

Idk if this is a hot take but Trudy/Kelsey are bi4bi and while both are futch, Kelsey would lean more femme and (imo) Trudy would lean more butch (but in the fifty’s version of the word) to rebel against the forced femininity Tucker programmed in her
