Rewatching The Clone Wars and I just got to Rookies

It's so fun because I'm just like "ah yes, this man right here is my favourite Star Wars character ever"

And it's literally just a dude

This is what happened:

„The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed.“

„You can say that again.“

I completely forgot about that scene until I started my season 1 rewatch and it hurt to see this.

Frankly a lot in the show‘s opener hurt.

Tech telling Echo he’s more machine than man percentage-wise.

Wrecker reminding Echo that he blew up shortly after he had a panic attack in the med bay.

Crosshair finishing Wrecker’s sentence with „and turned into THAT…“

Wrecker and Crosshair betting two credits on whether Echo is alive after the canteen fight (with Crosshair betting that he‘s dead).

Echo always keeps his cool, pretends not to care. Ever since his rescue he played things down, never wanted to be a liability, just kept on going.

But this…

„The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed.“ - „You can say that again.“

Echo didn’t expect to hear something that is so close to home in this moment.

This hurt.

Like the other things they said.

But in this moment Echo was blindsided, forgot to put is guard up.

This is where we see how he really feels.

The Clone Wars 7.04 v.s. The Bad Batch 3.13

it's amazing to see how CF99 goes from having zero trust in Echo's skills or loyalty, to zero doubt in him completing his mission -- and, arguably, their single most important mission to boot. (this was their best, and probably last, chance to find Tantiss base. and they had 100% trust and confidence that Echo would come through for them in this pivotal moment.)

I am a sucker for clones have curly hair so it felt only right to give him a little bit of curls the one time I actually draw young Echo. Also, tattoo inclusion which I mentioned in my last post.

I’m happy with 1 of the 9 in the expression sheet, I struggled with them, but this is all just practice anyway.

The Force Unleashed shows an interesting side of the Sith, specifically how, despite being in control of the galaxy, they are unraveling. Early Sith fought each other for power and their empires failed again and again as a result. Adopting the Rule of Two was supposed to fix that, and for a while it did. Once Palpatine destroyed the Jedi, they didn't fall to infighting again, but rather than each Sith apprentice surpassing their master, they get successively weaker.

Palpatine is a full-on Sith Lord of his own choice, relishing he pain he can inflict on people. Upon becoming the Emperor, signs indicate he kinda got bored and lost interest in his own empire. He doesn't show up to senate meetings and seems to defer business to his underlings. That evil old man needs enrichment. Somebody throw a pumpkin full of ground padawan meat into his enclosure.

Vader was manipulated into becoming what he is, and left emotionally hollow. There's nothing left for him to do except serve his master, whom he should be plotting to depose. He isn't working to gain more power because he only wanted power for a specific goal, saving Padmé, which is no longer achievable. But, even if Palpatine has other apprentice candidates, Vader still represents an impassible barrier. He's weaker than he should be, but so strong that nobody else can progress far enough to defeat him.

Galen's involvement violates the Rule of Two, which is a bad sign on its own since that's the Sith's guiding principle. Rather than by choice or by manipulation, Galen was forced to become a Sith from childhood. His only goal is to help Vader, who has no serious intention of challenging Palpatine because that can't get him what he wants. Galen should be the future of the Sith, but due to the interpersonal dynamics at work, he's completely pointless, therefore the Sith don't have a future. Over the course of the story, his strength grows as his loyalty wanes and he dies rejecting the Sith.

The Sith, in theory, are supposed to dedicate themselves to training the next generation. Without the Jedi as a target to strike and an enemy to compare themselves with, the Sith stopped functioning. It's good that Luke defeated the Emperor when and how he did, but the Sith's dissolution was only a matter of time anyway.

Echo canonically being sentimental (and a sweetheart)

With his armor, there's also the "For Hevy" memorial, the fact he kept Rex's handprint, and that he put the Bad Batch skull on his armor before he even joined them

Echo holding 99 as he died has always stuck out to me as one of the saddest/sweetest things in TCW (especially since the show rarely actually shows clones mourning/expressing much emotion)

I also noticed that Echo is often the one to mention his brothers by name, and make sure they're remembered. And of course his entire thing about saving his brothers and leaving no one behind. (Also that he turned the call signs into this like nickname/inside joke thing with Omega is so adorable to me ahh)

Not even a reaction to the name (and we know they are good at implying expression under those helmets)! I know this is old news but it bears saying lol. They had the perfect opportunity here to not only address Echo's loss, but also to honor Fives and the sacrifice he made to discover the chips. A sacrifice which saved Ahsoka, Rex, and now the Bad Batch. This is obviously not the first time Echo and Rex talked about Fives, he knows he's dead (I firmly believe he would not have left the 501st if Fives was still alive), but come on! This did the bare minimum to check the box of 'mention Fives.' How about you cut Wrecker getting attacked by a sarlacc or whatever and give that screen time to show us an actual conversation?

Like I found this bit in an interview:

While the conversation obviously never happened onscreen, Corbett says that doesn't mean it never happened, suggesting the two talked offscreen, saying "For Fives, I imagine that Rex and Echo had that conversation after he was rescued off of Skako Minor, and I know in Season 1 we did have Rex reference Fives on Bracca," adding "So, in my headcanon, they've had many conversations about Fives."

And I'm just like... Jennifer! You don't have to have headcanons, you are literally the writer! Show us!!
