Can i say something problematique for terminally online millenials and people born after that point: I think the seeming lack of ability or willingness to call one another and chat on the phone with friends unprompted or out of the blue contributes to whatever hellish loneliness everyone is talking about feeling these days. Say what you want about boomers and old people but those guys mostly knew how to keep in touch with each other. Idk man call a bitch today

My partner, bless her heart, is a great enjoyer of women characters, both protagonist and villainous.

And my partner, bless her heart, often looks at me and says "Sinister, everyone hates this character!"

And I say to her, "sweetheart, what were you reading that gives you that impression?"

And invariably she replies, pouting, "tumblr posts..."

At which point I have to remind her each time that tumblr fandom hates women.

That tumblr fandom invariably gives grace to and fetishizes the actions of villainous male characters and demonizes the same behavior from female villains.

That tumblr fandom invariably judges female protagonist with an unattainable level of moral scrutiny and attacks them for failing to meet their standards, while laughing off and excusing all the flaws of male protagonists.

That tumblr fandom invariably infantilizes female protagonists, refuses them agency in their own lives, and treats them as children in comparison to male characters.

That tumblr fandom invariably subjects every female character to the madonna/whore - I'm sorry, smolbean/girlboss dichotomy.

And that, I always must remind my partner, bless her heart, is why she has the impression that "everyone hates this character."

Fandoms stopped being a fun escape from reality when people started spreading the belief that you should prioritize purity over pleasure and the art you create must be a reflection of your moral standards at all times.

Fandom Problem #9545:

I unironicly miss when everyone and their mother ran their own fansite. Sure they were a bit cringey, with the copy pasted sprite images for links and whatever Linkin Park song they liked playing as soon as the page loaded. But when someone wrote in all caps "I AM THE BIGGEST "x" FAN EVAR" at the top of the page, you knew they were in fact the biggest fan evar.

I miss when people could just enjoy things without having to qualify it or explain it somehow. It was just "this thing gives me joy and I want to share it with you".

So you write a Dead Dove fic in which someone gets raped. It’s clearly labelled and tagged as such and yet readers leave comments that complain that it’s unexpectedly horrible. May I ask what you *were* expecting? I do wonder if you were possibly expecting “sexy” rape, as opposed to a screaming, crying, bleeding victim and his devastated partner. Well, what can I say?

Reading this reminds me of the time Buzzfeed had that article where they showed off art that made Disney Princesses 'realistic' when all the artists did was just add weight to them, ignoring cultural things (such as the time period of Beauty and the Beast) or straight up species (Like Ariel SWIMS around all day. Why would someone like that be really chubby? If you want her to be realistic, she'd be toned instead of really chubby like the artist chose)

It just SCREAMS proformative. Like look at me! I made them cubby and not conventionally attractive! Aren't I just so supportive and such a great ally? I've changed that nasty nasty design for you!
