OOOOOOO I LOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEEE this fairytales prompt for @elriel-month ! I’ve had this idea of Elain and Azriel spending a quiet moment together, out on a lake in the night court, just simply basking in each other’s presence and the peace it brings both of them. I really hope we see lots of the soft, quiet moments of these two together, it’s always so romantic! The best kind of fairytales come from the magic we make in our day to day lives, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.

And I think it would be more of a fairytale come true to Azriel that someone loved him so much they chose him over a mating bond, that someone loved him for simply who he is and not out of an obligation to fate.

For this piece, I imagined an afternoon spent in the garden, enjoying each other’s company when Elain comes upon a kaleidoscope of butterflies. They flutter around Elain as Az looks on in wonder at this beautiful life he shares with her, and discreetly sends out his shadows to give Elain wings of her own. 🦋

I was so lucky to have the @thesleepingfoxy bring this to life for me! She captured the wonder and magic and playfulness so brilliantly in this piece it left me breathless! Mary, you are an absolute angel for this🌸

✨As Azriel and Elain walk through an enchanted forest together, alone and at peace in the quiet sunshine, she looks up at him. She watches his great wings glittering under the sunlight and the way the green and gold in his eyes seem to glow. She thinks he is the most beautiful male she's ever seen, and she can't help but to pull him down into a kiss.✨

I have been keeping this close to my chest for so long and am so excited to finally be able to share it. I stare at it every day (it's my lock screen 😭) and I am so so thankful to lumachaii for bringing this idea to life with her skill and creativity. I told her I wanted Elain pulling Azriel down for a kiss in an enchanted forest, and she delivered THIS jaw-dropping work of art, inspired by Barbie Swan Lake.

Elain looked up at Azriel, their eyes meeting, his hand still lingering on the hilt of the blade.

I saw the painting in my mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection … that knife.

🌸🗡️I am just so excited how this was depicted so beautifully, the contrast between Elain’s gentle, vibrant spring and Azriel’s brooding shadows is powerful, almost ethereal.

The imagery of light and dark blending in the space between them speaks volumes about their connection, delicate, tense, yet deeply meaningful. And at the center of it all is that knife.

The very blade Elain used to stab the King of Hybern, in an act of courage that changed everything. A blade that Azriel guarded and has never let another soul touch. Yet Elain not only took it, but returned it to him, despite the horrors she endured, despite the blood it spilled.

That small, silent exchange between them is more than a moment, it’s a symbol of trust, understanding, and a bond that neither fully speaks of, but both feel deeply.

Thank you to the incredible @hatchatwork who brought this poignant moment to life with such care and beauty. The emotion, the symbolism, it’s all captured perfectly. 🦇⚔️

“She scanned Elain from head to toe, wondering if she’d been taking lessons in stealth either from Azriel or the two half-wraiths she called friends.”

Well… turns out if she had she would be top of the class.

What better way to stealth train than stealing the one thing no one else has dared to touch and has only been given freely to her.

“I have never once seen Azriel let another person touch that knife.”

Yet there she is graceful, quiet, all soft steps and sharper skill lifting Truth-Teller right off the shadowsinger himself.

And the way he would let her…?

Says everything.

In this commission, Azriel is giving Elain her fairytale moment by showing her a hidden garden path he stumbled upon while flying. I imagine Azriel can’t see a flower without thinking of Elain and he would want to show her every garden he comes across (and give her the princess treatment while doing so).

I’m so happy I had the chance to work with again! She is the SWEETEST and I adore working with her so much. Be sure to follow her because she is always feeding the Elriel fandom with beautiful sketches and prints to purchase. Thank you so much for creating this piece for me 🥹💗

Elain has always been more observant than anyone gives her credit for.

She notices the things others miss. She keeps secrets better than Azriel himself and even Nesta has wondered if she’s been secretly training with him and the twins.

In this piece she’s learning the language of flowers not for gardening, but for missions. Hidden messages in petals and stems. Because being a spy isn’t always about shadows and steel. Sometimes, it’s about knowing how to blend in, how to listen, how to be overlooked.

And Elain? She’s mastered all of it.

Inspired by the grandfather clock in the movie ‘Whisper of the Heart’ where a young king is in love with a cursed fairy. While brief, their story is a tale of forbidden love, of cursed fates, and of sincere longing. We are obsessed with how this piece came out and cannot wait for Elain and Azriel’s own story where they will challenge fate and true love.

Feyre once called Azriel “the knife in the dark,” only for Elain—Elain to be the one to step out of the shadows and kill an ancient king with Azriel’s dagger. Death and the lovely Fawn both embody this imagery of stealth and it isn’t a coincidence that Elain’s gift of Sight complements Azriel’s gift of hearing what others can’t. Together, once Elain’s gifts are trained and honed, they will be a formidable force as the eyes and ears of their court.

I knew as soon as I saw @paulymorphed’s work I had to reach out and collaborate with her. She truly went above and beyond with this piece and captured what I had in mind so exquisitely that it left me speechless. (My caps lock and exclamation mark buttons might beg to differ though 😅)

We wanted to have a lot of fun with this prompt and fell in love with this editorial concept. These two’s face cards deserve to be on the front page of a magazine, that’s for sure, and Jules delivered to a T. We are in awe of Jules’ talent and could not be more grateful for this incredible piece!

Something I haven’t been able to get out of my head for the next book is Elain using truth teller to unmake her unwanted mating bond and choosing the male who truly sees her; who has shown, in so many tiny ways throughout the series, what love can really be like with the right person. It will be so powerful to see her take fate into her own hands, after being at the whims of those around her for so long.

I love all the little hints SJM has sprinkled throughout the series that Elain might be learning from Azriel or have spy skills to complement his own. I’d love to see a scenario in their book where they go on some sort of mission and a lot of sexiness and tension ensues. Azriel has always prided himself on exercising the utmost professionalism as the Spymaster, but give him five minutes on a mission with Elain and a little flash of thigh and I think the male just MIGHT find his carefully crafted cool and calm slipping 😂
