As the direction around Magic sets has changed over the years, I've come to realize that the ones I like most are the sets that are about the plane itself, rather than about the characters or events taking place on it. I thought Tarkir Dragonstorm did a great job at showing what Tarkir was like now, highlighting the different groups, without focusing too heavily on legendary creatures or other "event-specific" cards.
Not that I don't want a Magic set to tell a story, of course I do, but it's tough to get a good feeling of how the events have changed a plane if it's all told within a single set. Personally, I like to see a "before and after" sort of structure. It would have been cool to have had a second set in the "block" to see how things changed as the old dragon lords were overthrown, to be followed up with what we got in Dragonstorm. But, given that this was only a single set, I thought it was very well done!
Feedback on Tarkir: Dragonstorm
I’m about to write this year’s “State of Design” article, and I’m interested on your feedback of Tarkir: Dragonstorm. What did you like? What did you not like? Tell me all your thoughts. I’d love to hear examples and details.
