I also illustrated how their wings fold
Okay so
I rarely post WIPs here but I FINALLY made something for wyverns that makes me happy
I really wanted to revisit them
I didn't like their wings but I was struggling to think of how they could have evolved
Then it hit me, bugs have spurs and little hairs
If an arthropod that evolved to be big and flightless before it evolved flight, perhaps they could have developed something akin to bird feathers?
They're more rigid than feathers though, more like hard intertwined sheets. Connected via microscopic hooks, giving them almost an uniform smooth look when airborne
Wyverns looks REALLY weird when perched since they evolved to hunt from the air, they're really awkward on their two feet/wings
The other two pairs of limbs are tucked under their proportionally small torso
They hunt by swooping down and grappling prey with their limbs, carrying it off if it's light enough or continously making slashing swooping down attacks until it bleeds out
The guy here is the biggest species of wyverns, I'm designing it because that'd the most clear visual of a wyvern I've had in my mind but I'll eventually move on to smaller species
These ones live and hunt inland (so big problem out in the Wastelands, you might get carried off by a fuckoff big bird bug thing) and migrate to coastlines in wet seasons/spring (depending on their breeding grounds)
They gather to mate, lay eggs in water and then fuck off back inland
And their nymph forms are also a giant ass predators, just not apex ones since there's bigger ones who might snack on them 馃挏 but I still wouldn't want to come face to face with a dragonfly larva that's bigger than an adult man

Here are some medium to small size species concepts :3
The very first one is a tiny beetle sized thing. They're flightless and use their wings to cover their body like a protective armour. Kinda like beetles

I haven't been digging calling some species in FaaF arthropods since they differ from them biologically in some aspects (like internal skeletal-like structure to support their increased size), and especially some branches look and behave practically nothing like Earth's arthropods
They're more so derived from arthropods
So I keep searching for inspiration to rename them and I think I landed on Arthromorpha which I really like
#thylacines can talk#faaf au#i mean it wont make complete bio sense either way it is a magical setting. where species that are nowhere near related can have offspring#together because of godly magic nonsense#the last common ancestor for wyrms and humans lived so long ago it might as well be like you trying to have a baby with a flea. and yet it#works. so you know. not exactly 100% scientifically accurate and im an amatour anyways

In just an hour since posting this it has now changed since I've decided I could make birds really weird
Specevo in FaaF is fun because when you're up North it's like. Oh alright. Just Earth but to the left, okay
Then you go a little South and what in the sci-fi shit is that
#thylacines can talk#arctic hyena? arctic lions? cool but not very original. sabertoothed bear birds? NOW we're talking#i wanted to make some grazer species that are birds but couldnt think of a way to have them evolve when said niches are already filled. then#i realised i have a prime real estate where arthropods and their descendants cant reach because of the temperatures#ill still have skme normalish mammals there too though you can rip my weasel bear out of my cold dead hands

selfshipping is good but something also essential is turning every character from medias you like into furries or animals. you have to do this to human characters you like

Something came over me to write a mini-fic with PK and PV
Pale King has been working late into the night when he heard a pitter-patter of tiny feet, followed by the door to his study creaking open with a whine.
"Dad?"
The king sighed heavily, his voice tired and strained, "What is it, little pup? Can't you sleep?"
"No..."
The tiny footsteps approached him and he gritted his teeth in response. He couldn't afford distractions, he failed once already and now said failure... no... no, he couldn't think like that. They were just a child. Brought here through no fault of their own.
"...Dad?"
He rubbed his face, his reading glasses coming to rest on his forehead, "I...apologise, little one. It's been some years since I've last had a child, I'm afraid I'm quite...rusty, so to say."
He looked down at the kid who tilted their head, staring up at him with big, soft, curious eyes.
"I have big siblings?"
"Oh, yes. Yes, you do. Quite a few," He hesitated before moving his tail to scoop them up onto his lap, his lower two arms wrapping around them, "I could tell you about them sometime. Perhaps not tonight, though. It's a long story."
"Oh, alright," the wyrmling spun around a few times before finally settling down in a comfortable position in his lap, "...It's alright if you're rusty, dad. I still like spending time with you."
He stared at the tiny bundle in his arms, his grip subtly tightening around them and pulling them closer. A knot twisted in his stomach when he felt their head nuzzle against him.
... If...if not a story, then...perhaps a song could put you to sleep? I'm not a singer, but I can hum."
Their head perked up curiously, ears standing at attention.
"It's something my dame sang to me when I was your age, and I've hummed it to your siblings in turn. You can hum along if you'd like to."
For the first time in that night, he's put down his pen, all four arms wrapped around his child, and held them close as his chest rumbled with a soft hum of a lullaby.
#hollow knight#pale king#pure vessel#faaf au#was talking with friends about a what-if scenario and ggot thjs idea <3#spooky writes

Huh. I've missed a bit. Anyway I love Speculative Evolution rambles. I have a few evolution projects myself. It's always fun to think "what if?" and then take matters into your own hands.
Also, your giant frogs remind me of the Beelzebufo, or "Devil Frog," from the Late Cretaceous Period. They lived in Madagascar and fed on small/infant Dinosaurs. Fascinating really. Keep doing what you're doing, you're coming along great!
Same!! Feel free to drop your specevo projects in my inbox or dms, I'd love to hear about them 馃憖
And thank you!!
You know what, I completely forgot about this guy's existence until you've reminded me, but I can see the resemblance!

Okay idea for bees and wasps gijinkas;
A human species that arose from hybrid speciation between Homo Sapiens Major and Homo Gracilipes Pictus
There are also a few species of human in my AU, though I am still developing them
Because I went in a direction of speculative evolution for this setting but still wanted to keep some weird traits for certain human species, I've decided that some of their lineages were altered by ancient gods through magic that's been (thankfully) forgotten to time.
Homo sapiens would just be most bugs gijinka equivalent and most common human species. Here called Homo sapiens vulgaris (common thinking man) since they're the most widespread of homo species.
Homo sapiens major (greater thinking man) is a subspecies of homo sapiens that's bigger and has greater muscle mass, making them overall stronger. They also have quite different societal norms, as majority of them are females and generally females are stronger than males, and mostly form matiarchal societies. They're equivalent to ants and termites. Maybe bees and wasps too but I haven't decided
Homo hyperboreus (man from the Arctic region) is a species of human living in the far north region. A direct descendant from the first saphont humans, as humans in this AU originated from the arctic regions. They're very similar to homo sapiens but have way more hair covering their bodies, which also tends to be light in colour. They're also all mostly dark skinned, to protect from the light bouncing off the snow. No bug equivalent, I just thought it'd be cool to have them here.
Homo gracilipes (slender-footed man) is split into two sub-species; H. Gracilipes Pictus (painted slender-footed man) and H. Gracilipes Hispidus (shaggy slender-footed man). They're one of the lineages that have been altered by old gods. They're digitigrade, posess antennae-like feelers on their heads, have sharp ears, and typically are more magically-inclinned. H. Gracilipes Pictus are diurnal and taller, while H. Gracilipes Hispidus are nocturnal, generally shorter, and with more hair on their bodies. Both species don't have strong sexual dimorphism, with the only thing setting the two sexes apart is the fact that male's feelers are usually longer or fluffier. Pictus are equivalent of butterflies and Hispidus are equivalent of moths.
Homo Sapiens Humilis (small thinking man) are a small species of human originating from a small island archipelago, which is what caused their size (island dwarfism). Another species lineage affected by the ancient gods, some of their members grow hard keratin sheets over their bodies. Bug equivalent are snails and slugs.
Homo Silvestris (man from the forest) are one of the modified species. They are a large, strictly carnivorous human with large, segmented mouths that extend down their throat, sharp teeth, pointy ears, and arms covered in hair, with long claws. Bug equivalent are most arachnids.
Homo Silveris Virosus (poisonous man from the forest) are a modified subspecies of the previously listed human. They're smaller with smaller mouths but are highly venomous. They're carnivorous and hematophagous. Bug equivalent are scorpions.
Now not exactly humans, but very closely related species that are still sapient
Anthropotimidus aquaticus (timid man found near water) is a species of homoids adapted to living in humid caves. Their skin is pale, almost translucent, and they lack body hair. They live in matiarchal societies and mostly keep to themselves. Bug equivalent are flukes and flatworms.
Anthronothos (false/wrong human), a large, cave-dwelling/nocturnal hominid species, evolved to feed on other humans. They live in small communities but are highly aggressive to any other species. HK equivalent of the nosk.
Anthronothos grandi, a subspecies of the aforementioned homonid but much, much larger. Because I can't help myself making biologically-accurate giants.

All of them also have a lot of variables in appearance, just like us humans do; the things listed here are just the most common traits
+ they all live all over the globe now, many of these species have shared homes for thousands of years

#thylacines can talk#faaf au#so like. homo sapiens and homo hyperboreus have been living together for a long ass time. theyre just different species of human with#different adaptations to the cold climate. does that make sense??

#thylacines can talk#faaf au#and i say thankfully because imagine some giant fuck just decided to completely alter your genome one day#i hope this all makes sense dkdhfjfj#im not great with latin#all the homos can interbreed with each other and create viable offspring btw. because nature spits at our definitions and there are multipl#separate species in nature that can produce viable hybrids. for some fucking reason#also im planning on making at least another human mimic thats sapient but not related to humans c:#aggressive mimicry my beloved
