Work inspired by Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol and his influence on my work
Andy Warhol was one of the world’s leading artists and photographers, renowned for ‘exploring ‘the relationship between artistic expression and celebrity culture’. Photographing and exploring himself through his imagery, his work ranged from portraiture and still life to New York Street photography.
The simplicity and use of colour throughout his work is what sparked my initial interest in him as a photographer. The progress of his career from his early work as a photographer to one of world-wide renown illustrates perfectly his diversity and skill in creativity and design.
As the leader of the ‘Pop Art’ Movement, his photographic work was very much influenced by the use and absence of colour. Consider, for example, his collection of polaroids shot in vibrant and bold hues, compared to his street photography for which he used black and white film. He was very clever in his use of colour in imagery to show how its inclusion or absence could impact mood and feelings.
In my view, the most influential section of Warhol’s photography is his collection of polaroids where he focused on taking pictures of celebrities, such as Debbie Harry and John Lennon. The images are posed, yet have an element of simplicity to them and the viewer reacts to them in different ways. This simplicity is very appealing to me and a factor that makes many of his images unique. I chose to emulate Warhol’s work during an element of my coursework where I was focusing on society’s obsession with money and material items. I photographed members of my family along side their favourite possessions or what they enjoyed spending their money on.
I also found Warhol’s still life images very appealing. Again, his minimalist style captured my attention. Similar to his polaroids, Warhol photographed his still life images on a plain background, grouping objects together or photographing them singularly.  For my work, I shot the objects in the same style as Warhol, also using a polaroid camera.
I am very interested in the documentary aspects of photography and in this genre, too, I found Warhol a great influence.  Raw moments of children and adults, captured across the streets of New York and other parts of America, were an inspiration to me. Warhol himself was also regularly photographed, understanding perhaps the viewpoint of his subjects as well as the transience of popularity when he was quoted as saying: ‘Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes’.
The fact that Warhol was captured so often made his work incredibly personal and intimate, giving us the viewer a peek into his personal life. However, he was in fact a relatively private person with many of his personal relationships only exposed after his death, Warhol was able to express himself personally and powerfully through his work and it felt as if he was showing himself to the world.
Photography is such a far-reaching medium that can express feelings, emotions and views in so many diverse ways. Yet the photographer often remains an anonymous figure behind the camera. I  much prefer to be wielding the lens, rather than being its subject, and like that my pictures can express my views as well as reflect those of my subjects.
