The original two Shenmue games on Dreamcast are still two of my all-time favorite games! I replayed them several years ago on their HD remasters, and I enjoyed them just as much. This write-up perfectly encapsulates the spirit on why Shenmue had made a lasting impression on me!

The first Shenmue is not just a simple game, but a monument of the era, a symbol of a creative genius who tried to break out of technology and digitize a real, vibrant, sensual world. The world where people are not just figurines, but individuals.
Perhaps, in their quest to get closer to reality, the developers have gone too far, forcing the player to run a lot, wait for the right hour for a long time and engage in a working routine. But the reward for patience and attentiveness was satisfying and emotional like the little sketches from the life of the city and its inhabitants.
One of the most pleasant things in the game was the relationship between the main character and his dear school friend, shy and gentle flower girl. And while he was too obsessed with his goal to catch the villain who took away his father’s life, even then he could see how the girl gently and carefully treats him.
The game’s plot gave a short time for their meetings, but the culmination of this unborn romance novel was one of the most beautiful love scenes in the history of video games, a high-speed trip together on a motorcycle along the night streets.

Masayuki Kato, the former president and founder of Nihon Falcom, one of the longest running RPG developers in the industry, just passed away on December 15th at the age of 78.
This is some really difficult news to process. Kato was seen as a polarizing figure among many Falcom fans. His conservative approach to business and outdated way of crediting creators led to many employees leaving the company in the 80s and beyond. But without him, many of these creators would have perhaps never gotten their start in the first place. He gave many developers their first job in the industry, people that would go on to change the landscape of video games as a whole. This includes:
Yoshio Kiya (creator of the Dragon Slayer series and pioneer of some of Japan’s first action RPGs).
Tadanobu Inoue (Early producer of the Atelier series at Gust).
Masaya Hashimoto (co-creator of Ys and co-founder of Quintet).
Tomoyoshi Miyazaki (scenario writer for Ys I-III , Artraiser, Terranigma, and many others).
Tetsuya Takahashi (creator of the Xeno franchise and co-founder of Monolith Soft).
Minako Iwasaki (character designer for the Rune Factory series).
Yuzo Koshiro (composer of Streets of Rage, Etrian Odyssey, and many other legendary soundtracks).
Ayano Koshiro (graphic artist on many titles ranging from Streets of Rage 2 to Lunar: The Silvar Star).
Tanaka Kunihiko (character designer for Xenogears).
Tenmon (composer for 5 Centimeters Per Second and many visual novels by Minori).
Makoto Shinkai (director of Your Name, Suzume, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and many others).
All of these creators got their start at Nihon Falcom and there are still many amazing people that remain at the studio. So while Masayuki Kato’s management can certainly be criticized, his company was also responsible for a lot of good. And I think it is telling that even creators that left Falcom, such as Yuzo Koshiro, have been offering their gratitude to Kato after hearing the news of his passing.
Rest in peace.

Would love to see this happen!
You pay attention to Mega64 at all? I think it's cool that those guys are still doing their thing and never became insane toxic dipshits.
They make me want to take the three-ish hour drive out to Santee to sample the local restaurants.
I catch a livestream here and there, I'm glad that they're still out there making things happen. Always wished that we did more stuff with them whenever we were all in the same town for events and such.

that enthusiastic glover fan was me, sorry. my seventh birthday party was glover themed. i didn’t know any better.
I think that’s another thing that people underestimate a lot. Sometimes kids are seven and don’t know any better. I mean my kids aren’t even seven yet and today I caught them playing Sonic the Hedgehog. Sometimes they’d even sing “Seeegaaaa” while playing it. Disgusting. I feel like such a failure.
