Shindou Family Values
So, Shindou Family Circumstances got me thinking about how cute Shuichi is as a parent, and that got me thinking about about Shuichi and family in general, and I came to the wonderful conclusion that family has always been shown as something important to Shuichi.
Think about it:
It’s not uncommon in anime for protagonists to have dead, absent, non-existent, antagonistic, or even abusive parents.
But that isn’t the case in Gravitation. (At least, not for Shuichi)
Granted, Shuichi’s parents aren’t around a whole lot in the manga, but that’s mostly because they aren’t key to the story.
And yet they still manage to be key to WHO Shuichi is.
Early on Shuichi jokes with a coworker that his parents don’t mind his after-school job because they’ve given up on him.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. After all, Mama Shindou did confiscate all his equipment at one point and basically said, “no band stuff until you get your shit together!”
We see them watching Shuichi on T.V.
And where does Shu go when he has a minor breakdown after singing with Ryuichi Sakuma on Hit Stage? That’s right: his parents’ place.
Even after Shuichi is out, they don’t seem to have rejected him in any way: they still had a picture of him hanging up in their home.
I think it’s more that his parents are kind of laid back and permissive. They don’t allow Shuichi to do as he pleases because they don’t care, but rather because they recognize that it is important to Shuichi.
Which is a stark contrast to the relationship Eiri has with his father. Papa Uesugi seems very strict and overbearing, with a do-as-I-say-because-father-knows-best attitude. I don’t think it’s because of any animosity towards his son. (and maybe in a later post I’ll go into detail about the theories and head canons I have for the Uesugi family) In fact, I think that Uesugi Sr. also wants what’s best for his son. He just takes the exact opposite approach that the Shindous do.
I wonder if part of the reason that Eiri hates Japan so much is because his father pushed a lot of Japanese culture on him as a child to compensate for Eiri’s non-Japanese appearance. Again, I don’t think he would do that out of a hatred for his son; I think he was trying to help Eiri fit in and instill a sense of heritage and national pride in him: it just backfired spectacularly.
But back to Shuichi…
He also gets along well with his sister. Yes, they tease and harry each other a bit, but they they are also supportive and amicable together.
Not only do we see this good relationship Shu has with his family, but through interactions with other characters, we see that family is an important concept to Shuichi in general.
One of the earliest arguments he got into with Eiri was because he suggested that Eiri should try to mend the broken relationship with his father. (The audacity!)
Of course, Eiri wasn’t necessarily wrong to suggest that Shuichi’s motives were less than pure, but that doesn’t mean that Shuichi didn’t genuinely desire for Eiri to make up with his father.
When Shuichi met Tatsuha for the first time, he noted how well he and Eiri got along.
And when Hiro was annoyed with Yuji, Shuichi basically said “Hey, don’t be a dick to your brother, he’s family!”
Hell, Shuichi was even incredulous that Yoshiki seemed supportive of Eiri despite what had happened to her brother, even getting upset when Yoshiki spoke ill of him. (Despite the fact that everyone, save for Eiri himself, blamed Yuki Kitazawa for what happened to Eiri that night.)
But perhaps the single most important scene for arguing what family means to Shuichi, and how important it is to him, is this one:
Tumblr media
He talks about making a family with Riku and Eiri. But most interestingly, he recognizes that Eiri didn’t likely have the same positive experiences he did growing up, and he wants to share those things with him and Riku.
And all of this comes full circle in Shindou Family Circumstances when we get to see Shuichi raising his own family ^_^

Up on the Housetop
inspired by the art of @dogscars  for the same prompt The expensive satin covers, goose down pillows and soft mattress are Al’s enemies. They try to pull him down towards the depth of ignorant sleep, to the abyss of oblivion, the darkness of vulnerability. He’s lying on his side on the bed with Valentino’s hands crawling over his naked body. Don’t fall asleep, he reminds himself. Don’t fall asleep. He doesn’t want to suffer through what happens to his body when he falls asleep. The way he’d wake up dirty, cum stains on his back. Used. Disgusting. No more than a sex toy. Valentino hums. “Can’t fall asleep, baby deer? I can help you with that.” Al shakes his head. “‘m fine,” he croaks. His throat is dry, he aches for water. Though he cannot get up, because Val will see that as an invitation. The hands - so many, like cockroaches crawling over his body - tighten their grip. “You sure, baby?”
Al doesn’t answer and Val doesn’t wait for a response. Val rolls him onto his back and moves himself between his spread legs. Al knows the drill and doesn’t protest. Valentino always gets his way, the only difference Al can make is the beginning. His body moves with the thrusts. Val’s moans sound muffled, like they’re from the other room.
His eyes are burning. From exhaustion? From grief? He doesn’t know. Doesn’t care. He’s not here, really. He’s somewhere far away.
At least he’s not asleep. At least Val can’t take that away from him.

…the omakes can surprisingly be really dark.
As always, Yato’s deep-seated issues are often played for laughs. (#ProtectYatofromTrashDad2k17)
