It is said that ‘Slash confronts the most repressive forms of sexual identity and provides utopian alternatives to current configurations of gender; slash does not, however, provide a politically stable or even consistently coherent response to these concerns.’ (Jenkins, 2012, pg. 190). This may align with the fandom’s audience members as an overly young audience is likely to be using these outlets of fan-fiction online as a way of providing release to sexual urges. ‘Queer’ literature such as this allows for fans to question their own sexualities. However, this brings into question the moral ethics of this – unlike the ‘characters’ of fandom Jenkins writes about in his work, due to the creation of digital culture and the rise of influencers. These are real people rather than characters, with the ability to read the things written about them. There can be attempts to ‘take back’ the control of fans by producers, for example ‘The Urge’, as written by Daniel Howell and posted on his YouTube channel, and illustrated by his fans.

From a Marxist perspective, ‘capitalist systems are able to extract value from the unpaid material labour of the prosumers on Web 2.0 sites and elsewhere’ (Ritzer, 2012, pg. 383). The producer here is therefore able to gain income from his fans material labour, due to their desire to obtain ‘total intimacy’ with their inspirations (Jenkins, 2006).
