I feel there is a misunderstanding. When I say people are basically selfish, I am not saying everyone is basic. I am just saying that selfish impulses are the easiest, the lowest, the simplest, and the most natural. That nice stranger on the subway had to overcome their basic impulse of selfishness to be nice to you, whether in the moment or over a lifetime of training. It doesn't mean people can't be good but just that they have to be good on purpose and with great effort.
