Pooch Cafe
At the start of the year Pooch Cafe was born as a kind of island in Australia Loop, nestled between Starbucks and Prada. Situated between Perth Avenue and Westminster, it was designed to be a hotpot for young urban professionals. A place where you could walk to downtown Perth neighborhoods, or shop in the Loop, in less than half an hour.
Now in its fourth year, the cafe now caters to the same clients. The same type of clientele - young urban professionals and visitors - but with a different name.
The all-grass-roots effect of the cafe is no longer unique to this one small corner of the Perth. Similarly green-minded and all-organic green cafes are sprouting up all over the United States and even internationally. In some places, such as Perth, these cafes have overtaken traditionally functional coffee shops as the most visited businesses and have gained something of a celebrity status.
These cafes provide an alternative to traditional coffee shops, which are typically full of overstuffed booths and reclining benches. In fact, many of them appear to be more of a theme park than a true establishment, being largely staffed by people wearing leopard prints, white t-shirts, and sporting a "green" brand.
And the atmosphere is often so friendly that the thing they are promoting may as well be a green tea latte. While "cafes" used to be synonymous with boozing, the majority of the venues are now geared towards the more classy and sophisticated. For the most part, the customers are part of a chic social scene, whereas their common ground is made up of caffeine and elaborate drinks.
While this Starbucks-like concept of cafes has been the norm for at least twenty years, some might argue that it took off after the opening of the Starbucks in Perth in 2020. And the combined effects of the drive-through and the increasingly sophisticated espresso drinks certainly made the whole concept more "hip" than ever before.
Nevertheless, it is easy to see that the trend is still on the rise. Indeed, it can be argued that the cafe as a destination for eating and drinking does not seem far off, if not already here.
There are many things about Pooch Cafe that set it apart from other coffee shops. One is the high standards of service, which is evident in the fact that the staff there will not only be able to provide the required information (which includes the menu), but also the answer to any questions you might have - regardless of whether or not you are a guest or a regular.
Another distinguishing feature is the high standards of food served at the cafe. Whereas typical cafe fare is usually limited to sandwiches, salads, pasta, and baked goods, the idea is that you should never feel as though you are sitting in a typical fast-food outlet.
The cafe itself is also much more informal than most coffee shops but also is more "shabby chic" than greener coffee bars. It has very few seats but is filled with people both ordering food and having their coffee or tea.
Unlike the conventional coffee shops that have been around for decades, these cafes are truly hybrid establishments, catering to both young urban professionals, and to the wealthy in the city. A concept which will undoubtedly continue to grow, and be imitated around the world.
