Hello Viria!! I just wanted to say I really look up to you as an artist! You're truly inspirational! I was wondering if you could share some of your wisdom? Specifically how do you give characters their own look? I feel like every time I draw, it looks like the same person just with a different hair style? Specifically withJason Grace and Luke Castellan, people have told me they look too similar when I draw them and I dont know what to do and it's really frustrating. Any advice would be amazing!

Awhh first of all thank you!

I think with book characters it’s the hardest because as distinctive as description can be, people still can imagine them however they want and it can be very different from what you see in your head. I do know the struggle of drawing similarly described characters (like both are blond, both have blue eyes etc) differently…I’m kind of same face syndrom here no matter how hard I try;_;

But, generally speaking. Try taking not only the visual, but also the essense of character into play. 

Say, Luke is that slightly angry, slightly “evil”, slightly lost and kind of impulsive type of a character.

Jason is more…subtle, kind and more steady with things he believes in. Like, the main characteristic, it can be as basic as evil/good.

With that in mind, Luke’s features can be more anglular, somewhat sharp, generally slimmer build, whatever you associate with angry anti hero.

For Jason it’s something softer, something if not round than square, more steady features? If Luke is sharpness, then Jason is more..balanced. 

I don’t know if I explain this good enough, and I definitely couldn’t quite portray them as differently as I’d like, but it’s something that can help with basic features. I always think about the character itself when I give someone their features. It can be so much easier to make differences between one “good” and one “evil” character, than it would be for say, two good ones. Like, the appearance I associate them with is already “taken” and you have to consider more of the characteristics.

I guess it’s something that comes with a lot of human understanding, and generally empathy in a way…And also lots of practise, because with all understanding some people still won’t be able to transfer it on paper because it’s something they don’t yet know how to do.

Either way, I hope it gives a general idea and it can help even a bit
