I have completed my animatic. I wanted it to be ironically funny with the voice over and music added and I think its worked really nicely.
I wanted to create a ‘tour guide barbie’ vibe for the voice over, I have also asked my friend from america if she will record a version for me to see if her accent improves the overall advert, I’m also going to ask one of the technicians at uni who helped with my final BA animation, if he would help and record a version as a ‘david attenbrough’ and see if that works better.
I have also created a mock of how I want the character scrapbook to be layed out, I think it works really nicely and can’t wait to start making the final version.

I have almost completed the animatic for my animations, Ive decided to group them together to create an advert for the ‘social safari’.
I have completed all my character background with editable layers ready to separate for depth in after effects.
I have most character work finished except a turn around for each character, with only one for the bat character. I think that will be my main focus in the next few weeks because if Im using ToonBoom to rig that’s the vital part of how to do so. I have also thought about using Maya to animate my characters as its still animating on 2D planes and I have an experienced maya expert living with me so im going to look into that aswell.
I do have an unfinished walk cycle of my lioness character drawn in ToonBoom, showing the essence of her character, I do enjoy drawing my characters frame by frame but It could be too lenghty for the 2 minute anmation.
I have 2 mock ups, the otter and the lion, of how I would like the animations to look once completed.
all digital progress of my work is on the project support page.

I have completed my peacock and monkey illustrations and Im so happy with how they have turned out.
I have also coloured some of my character sketches using procreate to add texture. Id like to find a way to animate them and for them to still keep their texture as apposed to flat vector colour. I have been in touch with a rigger from brown bag who works with ToonBoom who is helping me with rigging characters. Its unclear yet if ill be able to keep some texture. Its looking likely ill have to create my own brush in Toonboom to add texture to it.
I have also finished my storyboards and intend to start making the animatic and he goal is to finish that within 2 weeks.
this week I intend to draw some more character poses and finish another background.
all progress of my work is shown on the project support page.

After receiving more feedback and looking at the time I have i have decided to create my backgrounds in procreate instead, this will save me some time and I can create more depth within the animation using 3D layers on after effects.
I have also started the basic sketches for a couple of my animations and aim to get at least one complete in the next week.
I have been watching a few TED talks with relate to my research and asking other people what they think of my work. my ideas are provoking the reaction I was hoping for.

Due to horrendously bad weather last week I was unable to do anything I had planned for that week as the university was closed.
I do however now have check list of things I need to do in preproduction ready for the next step which has helped me a lot so far and eased some stress.
i have also manged to design the male penguin in my sketchbook and female penguin and otter digitally so some progress has been made on characters, I am not where I’d like to be at but I’m definitely moving forward.

This week I am aiming to finish the second character turn around and start another. I have also decided to only make turn arounds of the main characters.
I also would like to complete another one of my storyboards and start the final one. I have completed one and have two in progress, I have 4 in total.
To improve my work flow I want to see if purchasing an IPad Pro would help. Its hard for me to travel each day so I am hoping this way I can work at uni and at home and even do extra work on the nights as I really need to get a move on with my pre production work.
I have also created a check list of what needs doing in my pre production which I will print and check off as I go.
I have started to create a proper schedule of how what I would like to do to try and stay on top of the work load.

This week I will further develop my character ideas and start to draw them digitally. This will roughly take me about 4 weeks to complete all 7 characters with expressions and turn arounds.
I started properly storyboarding my animations up on the ma room wall, it will be easier to get peer feedback this way.
I have also started to outline the design and layout of the character scrapbook.
I will also start to collect materials for sets and start to assemble them.

I have changed my mind about the animations I would like to create as I think my previous ones don’t really suit the aim of the project
I have decided going forward that I will still create the lion, penguin and bat animations but instead of the gorilla I will create an animation based on the ignorance people have developed with their phones.
I have chosen to do an animation based asian short haired otters, these animals are extremely family orientated.
I have also changed my mind about the illustrations for the same reasoning, I will ask turn the previous idea of the baby crocodile animation into a sketch, it will save time as well as I can get the point across with an illustration.

I have had to take a few weeks off to recover from a medical injury which Is why there is a large gap.
Getting back into my work I have developed a better idea of how I would like to present my work.
I have chosen to base my animations in and around the zoo as I view the world of social media as fake and people are often using it to create a better image of their lives, just as I think animals in a zoo would so if they could use social media.
I am going to create a character scrapbook, full of the influences and illustrations to go along side my animations giving a better understanding to the audience who views my work.
They can see directly what my influences were and it is a nicer way to present my illustrations.
The illustration ideas I have so far are
A group of chimps sat together but talking via group chat
Group of painting dogs online gaming to hunt a keeper while a real keeper walks by them
Panda watching Netflix as people ignore the real world for streaming.
Meerkats peeking out and reporting like pointless news sites and apps.

I have recieved 50 responses on my survey from various ages and it’s quite surprising to see that the younger generation are more aware of who can see their posts than older, as well as older people are more likely to send anonymous hate if given the option.
The common downsides are that you see pointless posts and that it does come between people which is great to see that my work will match a public opinion.
I am thinking about how I can incorporate an illustration or animation based on people photoshopping themselves for social media but really unsure how to do so.
I have also found a few artists in which my work is similar.

I have drew concepts for the characters and set design. I will fully intend on making physical sets with my 2D characters.
The animations I plan on creating are
Lions taking images of their food based on the various food posts on social media.
A gorllia taking a gym selfie based on various posts I see about people saying they’re in the gym.
A bat taking a selfie based on one of my friends taking a selfie mid conversation.
Baby crocodiles hatching and immediately being given a tablet/phone based on various photos and observations.
Two penguins mating over an app based on the way that most people meet in this generation.
This week I will develop these ideas by asking my peers and the intended audience their opinions on my ideas.

I have decided to create 5 animations and 4 Illustrations.
The characters will be anthropomorphic instead of humans.
I created a survey that I hope will help me find a little bit more about my subject area and strengthen the ideas I have.

I have been developing thumbnail ideas for animations surrounding the idea.
I have been playing with the idea of creating human characters based on animals or anthropomorphic ones.
I have also decided to do some of my ideas as illustrations along side my animations, this is all documented in my sketch books.

STAGE 2
moving onto stage 2 of this MA my focus is around social media and technology  and the idea of how it is destroying face to face interactions which are supposed to make our lives ‘better’.
I will look further into this with primary photographs from my personal experience and how this is effecting my life and branch out from there.
I want to find out how this also is effecting the next generation as technology and social media seem to be dominating their lives making their lives so very different growing up.
at the end of this part I intend to have animatics and full character designs based off what I have observed.

I really admire mixed media animation, particularly the mixture of 2d with real life backgrounds.
Using the social study as a premise I think I will definitely be producing something along those lines for my final piece, either photographs of actual places or create small scale sets to draw the characters on to, similar to my final BA animation which I will post onto the artists page.
I am thinking that my final outcomes will be a collection of character design sketches, life drawings and animated walk cycles of my characters, from which create small narratives. Also thinking about creating a large print of of a street and filling it full of the characters/animals associated with my work.
I am going to find artists who have work similar to this to try and show what i mean by this.

focusing on just the behaviour of people at night is limiting the characters and animals I could compare, I think looking at or at least including various scenarios might be better and after the recent trip to London it is very interesting to me how different the people are down south from up north aswell, I’m thinking maybe this could be another focus point to study.
My plan this week is to venture out and do some life drawing around the town centre and just observe people going about daily activities to start to collect a basis to build characters from and compare to animals.
