finale poster
My final iteration of my Global Awareness Female Genital Mutilation poster came with a few changes.
Sebastian saw that because my duotone colouring was too small in some areas that it was creating patterns so I adjusted those sizes up to get rid of the pattern.
Many classmates thought the top quote should be larger so I did that and  Sebastian told me to majorly shrink it — and no offence y’all I went with his suggestion. But I couldn’t figure out placement so Claire helped me in figuring out the centering above the hand so shoutout to her.
Originally the entire tulip symbol was red and people couldn't distinguish it from the scythe. I didn’t want to thicken any lines though because I didn’t want to disrupt the continuity of the line work. I got stuck but finally  made the ‘flower’ black and white, but still wanted to get some red in there — which is why I used the ‘x’ mark. Just a stylistic choice honestly.
Thank you to everyone who helped me get this poster to where I wanted it to be !!!

Illustration Experiment — Celebrity Portrait
“Being sober on a bus is, like, totally different than being drunk on a bus.” — Ozzy Ozbourne
I grew up trying to impress my sister by pretending to like the things she liked, such as Black Sabbath. Somewhere along the line though I realized I wasn’t faking anymore and I really did like them. Despite his messiness, Ozzy is a legend plain and simple. I drew him on paper first, just a rough sketch to get the shapes, before I combined a couple different tools from Illustrator,  Photoshop, and Procreate to compile this illustration. Originally the background was plain but I wanted to jazz it up texture, because I could hear Sebastian saying “don’t forget texture” in the back of my head. I’m ecstatic that I went from using a single program, to two, and now three for a single illustration. I think it might be my favourite work this year, though to be fair I’m also very Sabbath biased.

Illustration Experiment — Vector Art
While I know we’re not supposed to use text typically, after I recovered this piece from my colouring book I just needed too. The whole “move to Mars” concept makes my skin crawl, because really if we’ve ruined this planet, what’s going to stop us from destroying the next? Sorry this is supposed to be a rationale not a rant, my bad. Anyhow, the colouring book gave me a fresh look at illustrator, one with a lot less hate for the pen tool. I had to watch so many Youtube tutorials to get it down, and I still struggle with it here and there but considering I haven’t been using AI so much this year I’m happy with how it turned out. also in recolouring this section I was really able to see the change in tone between this and the original page I’d done.

Illustration Experiment — Raster Art
Over the break I visited an old friend in Vancouver and I met her pet snake Todd, and new immediately I’d be a fool not to illustrate them. I’m still getting back into the swing of Procreate, but this time around I used both it and Photoshop, to try and challenge myself to try something new. I’m mostly happy with how the colours turned out, because I’m typically not good with keeping things cohesive in an illustration but with this piece I can see myself getting there.

Illustration Experiment — Texture
For this week’s illustration experiment we were challenged to work with texture in our illustrations. In Procreate I only ever use the pencil brush for sketching so I wanted to push myself to complete a piece, with texture, but relying on a single brush. I find it overwhelming to work with multiple textures so I’d like to challenge myself to pursue that next, but for now I’m happy with this outcome.

Illustration Experiment — Ink
After doing it on paper I dragged it into Procreate to refine the look of the ink, using only ink styled brushes of course. I’m usually most comfortable working in ink, but not in bringing it int software for refinement so that was a challenge for me this week. In theme with Halloween and October I picked a scene from one of my favourite old films. The crowd shrieks at her to confess to witchcraft, and she just sticks her tongue out at them... legendary.

Illustration Experiment — People doing things
I was inspired by a vintage photo of a woman skipping rope with a dog, since it’s such an odd but funny photo. I am not good with anatomy, and needed a lot of help from my sister and I’m still not totally content, but anatomy sucks to learn. That being said any progress is progress. I definitely want to try to draw people more in my spare time, just because it’s so difficult for me.

Illustration Experiment — Play with Colour
With our only parameters being colour I struggled a lot trying to think of something to illustrate. It wasn’t until Bubblegum Bitch by Marina and the Diamonds came up on my Spotify that I decided to buckle down and commit to a single colour concept. I would like to do this one again, with a bigger palette, and honestly probably a better illustration choice to challenge myself more but I am a rookie with colour theory and it intimidates me a lot, so I didn’t want to bite off more than I could chew. My rationale behind the palette, apart from the song it was inspired by came from me wanting to pull those nauseating cotton-candy, bubblegum, typically tawdry colours and combine them in a way that I enjoyed. I used procreate and used one of the pencil brushes for the line work so there would be a variation of breaks within the lines for the colour to be able to be partially seen through.

Illustration Experiment One
For this assignment I ended up doing multiple 20 word lists mixed with some word generators to stop myself from premeditating concepts. The two unrelated words I ended up choosing were snowglobe and supernal. The snowglobe aspect is pretty straightforward in itself but I wanted to keep the artwork simple for myself since I haven’t touched Adobe Illustrator since last year. Supernal means relating to the sky or the heavens, so I decided to take out the typical snowman village scene we see on every retail shelf throughout the holidays and replace it with a simple but what I hope to be aesthetically pleasing scene of the sky.
