Cheoljong. Let’s chat.
Alright. So. I gotta post about the following dialogue in episode 17 of Mr. Queen because it’s going to take me a long time to get over it and I need to attempt to get my thoughts and emotions out. Here are the bits of dialogue (it’s all from one scene; I just cut out some dialogue that was inconsequential to my feelings on all of this):
CJ: My Queen, you are what I love most. There’s something I’ve always wanted to give you. What I want to give you is outside the palace.
SB: What is it?
CJ: Freedom.
[……]
CJ: I was thinking all night; why would my Queen be so angry? For most women in the palace, pregnancy is a blessing. Why does pregnancy bother my Queen?
SB: So, you know why?
CJ: No. No matter how much I think about it, I don’t know it. So, I don’t understand it, but I just decided to accept it. That what is a blessing to others, may not be a blessing to my Queen. My Queen is this kind of person.
Ok. Ok ok ok…first of all. Cheoljong. Uri Cheoljongie. CHEOLJONG. Was it really necessary to be this absolutely wonderful?? The first bit of dialogue is not what I’m going to be getting into the most, I’m mostly freaking out about the second part, but I wanted to include that first bit just for the mere fact that it is absolutely adorable. And it does kind of tie into the rest because him bringing Sobong outside the palace is linked to what he explains in the second half of this chunk of dialogue; it’s all an attempt to somehow make her feel better in any way he can because he really is at a loss as to what exactly would help her. He does his best. And it’s in the cutest, most non-forcible way. So yeah. I included that first bit. Anyways, to the second half of the conversation….
Like. This is a man from the Joseon dynasty. And not just any man; the KING. King. A position where one of the biggest priorities outside of running the country is to produce heirs to give the throne to one day. And here, Cheoljong is presented with being (seemingly) on track to success in that goal. But. His wife isn’t happy about it. Not only would that be taken as an affront by any husband during that time period, but most especially by a King who typically saw their Queens as basically heir-making machines for them (I’m not saying there couldn’t be genuine love and care and stuff going on between Kings and Queens, but really, when you really whittle down to the bare bones of what it meant to be a Queen in history, the thought was that their most vital role was to produce babies). But does Cheoljong get angry? Does he get offended?? No. My boy DOES NOT. Instead, he’s confused. And what does he do with that confusion? Sits on it. Contemplates things. Tries to think of reasons as to why his wife would be so angry and unhappy about something that makes him (and all the women he knows of) overjoyed. And when he can’t figure out what the reasons could possibly be, does he then get even more frustrated and lash out? AGAIN, NO. MY BOY IS BETTER THAN THAT. He accepts it. He accepts that while he may not understand why Sobong is upset, that is currently how she is feeling towards this news. And that whatever the reasons are for these emotions, the emotions and reasons are valid because they exist at all, because they are HER emotions to have. Additionally, when they’re together he doesn’t even try to demand answers from her. He doesn’t ask her why she is feeling that way. Because his own acceptance is enough for him, and at this point he knows Sobong well enough to know that if she wants to tell him what’s wrong, she will. But it’s her choice to do so. Can we just acknowledge how AMAZING this is??! And actually, side note: it’s super sad that I should be so amazed by it because this is like…basic decency in terms of letting other people feel the way they feel, especially when it’s something that concerns/affects their body and health, but the sad truth of the matter is that it’s still a concept that is so difficult for men to grasp even today when it comes to women. And because of this, when a man is able to do something like this he gets overly praised (like when a dad gets super praised for changing diapers and shit…uhhh that’s called parenting; he doesn’t need special praise for that…but I digress). What I CAN say without shame though is that it is particularly amazing for man in this time-period (and yes, I’m aware it’s fiction shhh whatever) because of the fact that there are still men in the 21ST CENTURY who cannot grasp the concept that what may make one woman overwhelmed with joy, may make another overwhelmed with misery…almost like each woman is unique and different from the next. Shocking.
Anyways…I had absolutely zero idea of where this was even heading or if I even had a real point to succinctly close on; I just really needed to try to get my thoughts out because I got emotional. Basically what I want to say is: GET YOU A MAN LIKE CHEOLJONGIE. Get you someone who loves you the way he loves Sobong.

When tv shows or movies usually include time travel, the characters are always so careful not to change the past because of the butterfly effect, to maintain the timeline and protect the future.
Meanwhile in Mr. Queen Jang Bong-Hwan pulls up like "Did you learn the multiplication table yet?" "Lemme introduce you to what an oven is" "LEMME KILL THE QUEEN"

Not to be dramatic, but I don’t think I ever saw a drama ending that put the characters through so much pain as I saw it in Mr Queen
SPOILERS
Like, I know what you’re going to say (Goblin, Scarlet Heart?). But Jesus, this was supposed to be a comedy and
and
He comes back?
Jang Bong-hwan…
COMES BACK???????????
WHAT
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME HE RISKED HIS LIFE - HE FOUGHT - FOR HIS KING AND HE DOESN’T GET TO LIVE HIS FUCKING KINGDOM?
He doesn’t get to be happy and free with Cheol-jong, even though he LOVED HIM, he truly LOVED HIM, he doesn’t get that? He gets to come back and BE ALL BY HIS FUCKING SELF, ALONE with only the knowledge he made the world a better place but with NOTHING for himself?
He, that was HAPPY with his child, that protected his unborn baby, that wrote to that baby, that was MISERABLE WITHOUT HIS KING, he, that loved his friends and his cook and his HUSBAND, HE HAS TO COME BACK AND LIVE A LIFE HE DIDN’T CARE FOR ANYMORE???
AND CHEOL-JONG
That didn’t give two shits about the “original” Kim So-yong; in fact was too cold towards her; he who fell in love with THAT DIFFERENT PERSON, that crazy human being that kept challenging him, he fell in love with the bold person who shared midnight talks with him, he wanted to have a CHILD with that person, not with the “original” So-young!
HE HAS A SENSE OF LOSS AFTER BONG-HWAN IS GONE.
Can you imagine how miserable he’ll be??? Running everyday missing his wife, even though his wife is right by his side? Trying to find the person that didn’t use honorifics, that knew things about the future, that used to yell at him? And there’s only good, well behaved So-yong there?
And he’ll be devoted, sure, because how could he be anything else? But if he doesn’t notice, if he doesn’t MISS THE PERSON HE WAS ONCE IN LOVE, then he’s not better than that fucking Kim Byeong-in.
I love the show. I LOVED IT. But fuck. that end fucking hurts.
(and don’t even get me started on Byeolgam Hong)

I'm still in mourning.
1. Bong Hwan's life is pitch black now.
2. The prince will only know about So Bong only when he reads the prenatal journal.
3. How tragic is Cheoljong's love story. Was duped by Hwa Jin. Fell in love. Met So Bong. Fell madly in love. Left with So Yong. Still in love with the same face, but different soul. CheolBong's love story ended when both were half dead due to being shot.
Rest in peace my beloved power couple.

Mr. Queen ending seems like a happy ending for a total sum of ten minutes, the minute you stop smiling and think about it, Jang bong hwan was ripped away from his lover, his friends, his family and pushed into his time where he didn’t have anyone. He lost them forever.
Cheoljong is now confused as to why his queen isn’t like before, he feels something missing but he doesn’t know what. He is in the same situation as before, someone lying about their identity and he is committed to them. he will continue to be with So-yong and “try to understand” her all over again.
So-yong is with the king who loves someone else and she knows why, she knows what happened, so she can’t fool herself into thinking that he loves her. but she goes with it because she loves him.
TELL ME, for WHOM is it a happy ending?!!?!

The Most Romantic Lines in Mr. Queen:
King Cheoljong to Bong-hwan: “Why did it anger you so much?” “So? Did you figure it out?” “No, I cannot seem to figure it out. So, I decided to accept it, although I cannot understand it. That a blessing to others, may not be a blessing to you.”
King Cheoljong to Bong-hwan: “I’ll comfort you tomorrow.” “Your existence is comforting enough.”
Bong-hwan to Byeong-in, about Cheoljong: “You asked me why it has to be the King. Let me answer that question now. If someone has to be King, I think he’s the best one. He’s the most king-like out of everyone. So don’t stop me from going and casting a precious vote to the King.”
King Cheoljong to Bong-hwan: “When you weren’t in the Palace, I was surrounded by darkness, like there was a blackout. Oh, ‘Blackout’ means…” “No need to explain. I understand how you feel. I felt the same way.”
Bong-hwan to King Cheoljong: “If you really are from the future, then you must know the ending of this fight too. What happens?” “You’re going to lose. But I’m going to bet everything I’ve got on you.”
Bong-hwan to King Cheoljong: “So, you put all the eggs in my basket.” [Laughs] “Yes. All in. I went all in on you.”
#mr. queen#cheolbong#shout-out to hwan's line to captain hong: 'i can do anything if it's for you' which was also romantic. u cannot change my mind#mr queen
