You may already be aware but the UK Supreme Court has ruled on the definition of a woman in UK law and it is not in our favour.

"The UK Supreme Court has unanimously decided that the definition of sex under the Equality Act 2010 refers solely to biological sex, and does not include people with a Gender Recognition Certificate."

What this means is that being assigned at birth the biological sex of female means you are legally a woman, regardless, and being assigned the biological sex of male at birth means you can never legally be a woman, regardless.

Trans people still have protection under the law as "gender reassignment or presumed gender reassignment" remains a protected characteristic of the Equality Act 2010. However, trans women do not have the right to sex-based protections anymore, even if that was the reason for discrimination, and can be legally excluded from women-only spaces.

Obviously this is horrifying and disheartening, but it's important that you have all the facts. For anyone who isn't aware, here's a short timeline so yk what happened and who to blame

2018, Scottish Government passed the Gender Representation on Public Boards Act, which happened to include those with Gender Recognition Certificates/ living as women and undergoing transition as women for this purpose

2023, Scottish Government passed the Gender Recognition Reform as an amendment to the Gender Recognition Act. This would have made it easier to legally change gender

January 2023 Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Government used powers given by Section 35 of the Scotland Act (powers that allow UK government to veto Scottish legislation despite their devolved power) to block this.

Despite that particular reform being blocked, the Scottish definition of womanhood remained and this freaked out the group For Women Scotland, who got a case appealed all the way to the Supreme Court to challenge the Scottish Government. Case began November 2023

The group For Women Scotland is significantly funded by J.K. Rowling, who's money will have been a big help to them in their legal fees for this case. There will be other prominent donors

The case is called to interpret the Equality Act and the Gender Recognition Act, and is against the Scottish Ministers. They are being represented by their lawyers rather than appearing in court and have mostly not been commenting.

The Labour Government has been called on for comment and Equalities Minister Bridget Phillipson says the government supports maintaining the sanctity on single sex spaces, and they appreciate clarity in the law

Message to all alleged “anti-war tankies”

If you were truly anti-war, at worst you’d at least try to pretend to be neutral, and not support either side. At best, you would not be on the side of Russia, the aggressor that, unprovoked, invaded a smaller sovereign nation that was peacefully minding its own business, was not in NATO, and wasn’t even applying for NATO membership. NATO was not the cause of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As always, I remind people that Russia is committing war crimes in Ukraine, including but not limited to: erasing all mentions of Ukraine from schoolbooks, murdering entire civilian populations of Ukrainian cities, and kidnapping thousands and thousands of Ukrainian children (some as young as 4 months old) and placing them into “re-education” centers where they are forced to learn how to become good little Russians. Russia is indiscriminately bombing civilian targets like funerals, churches, schools and hospitals, and the Russian army is using mass rape as a weapon of war.

(Remember, Ukraine has demonstrated that they have the capability to reach Russian held territory, but unlike Russia, the Ukrainian military has only targeted military installations.)

If you can just hand wave all of the Russian war crimes and atrocities away because “America bad,” then please spare everyone your anti-war concern trolling, and your faux worries about Ukrainians dying. Just admit that as long as, lol, “communist” Russia isn’t the one being invaded, you are morally indifferent to human suffering and you actually do not care about ending wars.

Russia can end the war instantly just by going home.

I’ve recently been thinking about one of the times I was in russia—in Saint Petersburg—in April of 2007.

People think this evil from Putin is a new thing. It’s not.

2007 was before russia invaded Georgia, and before they invaded Ukraine.

It was about a month before “Victory Day”, and already the entire city was covered in the black and orange ribbons, and Nevsky Prospect—the most famous street in russia—had multi-storey banners of propaganda and Putin’s face all over the buildings.

Because of my (Northern Irish) surname, the woman my brother and I were meeting up with assumed I wasn’t Ukrainian. And so when I said I was, she BURST OUT LAUGHING. She said “Sorry, but I always laugh when I meet Ukrainians. They sound so stupid when they speak.”

She was then horrified that my Ukrainian family didn’t like the Soviet Union.

russians say one thing to Westerners and something else entirely to the people they invade and colonise over and over again. They hide their racism when they speak to people in the West.

That same trip to russia, the building we were staying in ON NEVSKY PROSPECT was raided by two truckloads of men with machine guns. Tour buses were driving past, and armed men were raiding our apartment!

A few days later we were in Tallinn in Estonia. Bronze Night had just happened, when russian thugs trashed the city because the Estonians moved a Soviet statue. Every single window in the city centre was held up with wooden boards.

This was nearly twenty years ago.

I look at all these idiotic tankies in the West (and on Tumblr). And I’m shocked by their wilful ignorance when it comes to russia.

I'm not American, but my feed is full of soft russian propaganda. Fake accounts, or clueless Westerners, posting over and over about how Ukraine has to surrender for their own good.

They keep using the term "to the last Ukrainian", acting as if Ukrainians have no agency in fighting for their freedom, and as if russia has a right to invade and colonise their neighbour. AGAIN.

I have family killed, missing, or POWs in this genocidal invasion. They know what they're fighting for. Let them speak about their own country, which apparently nobody here can even find on a map.

And it's no coincidence that the Kremlin has upped their "Ukraine must surrender to genocide" narratives so much right now, days out from MAGA likely sending the world into WW3.
