Dante was a man of many excuses. He was always looking for some outside force to compel him to do something or not do something. Maybe the religion he'd grown up with had made him that way. Still, he liked not being the one solely in control of his intentions. "Someone seriously brought ribbons to a party? Sounds like you hang out with an interesting crowd," Dante commented. He couldn't think of the most interesting thing he'd seen at a party but it certain was never ribbon dancing. "That sounds like some fortune cookie wisdom," Dante laughed though he was right. Even though Dante hadn't slept it didn't make it any less of the morning. It just meant that Dante would inevitably be wasting away the rest of his morning by sleeping whenever he went home. Dante took another drag before offering the joint back to Callum. "Excuse me? Oh, are we still talking about surfing? I guess it's a bit of both," Dante answered truthfully. He was a bit fearful of the ocean in general but really he didn't have any desire to surf. It seemed like an awfully expensive hobby and one logistically he couldn't get behind. How was he supposed to lug a surfboard around when he didn't even have a car? "I take it you're a risk taker then?"

"Never is just an excuse to not do things." Callum responded but there was no malice in her tone. There were always reasons to take inaction and it was just too boring. "They do seem rather unnecessary." He mused, using his arm to cover his eyes from the sun. "I saw someone bring out ribbon dancing at a party once. That was good." Then again, they were rather intoxicated so anything would have been entertaining. He couldn't even remember who that was but he hoped them the best.
"Your perception of time doesn't affect its passing." Although he definitely had plenty of time when he slept the bare minimum, Callum had reached a better equilibrium. He had too many responsibilities. Allowing the relative silence to roll over them, he let his body relax into the sand. "Is it a lack of desire or is it fear?" Callum asked after a few minutes of listening to the waves rock onto the shore. "Good to challenge that fear when it's safe too. But I'm just a stranger, you can disregard with no offense taken."

"Rarely isn't never," Dante pointed out. That just wasn't a risk he was willing to take especially not knowing how to swim. How would he ever escape a shark attack under those conditions? No, he was perfectly content enjoying the ocean from the shore. "I've never been a big fan of fireworks either. They stink," he added though Callum was right, he'd been around fireworks and the stupid people lighting them in far riskier situations and still survived. Fourth of July had always been a spectacle at his house growing up. Having four brothers there were bound to be a couple pyromaniacs in the bunch it was just statistics. Dante took another drag from his joint and resisted the urge to melt right into the sand. He was definitely going to have to cut himself off after this one or he'd end up falling asleep there on the beach and he'd much prefer that happening in his bed. "Can you still call it morning if you haven't gone to bed yet?" Dante asked. "Nice to meet you, Callum. I'm Dante," he introduced himself. Dante had lived in Avalon for two years now but he still felt new to town especially because everyone seemed to already know everyone else but he expected that from the tight knit community. It wasn't like he was in some big city where people came and went on a whim.

He only hesitated for a few beats before accepting the joint. As was the start to a number of great adventures. "Thanks." After a long inhale, he returned the joint and sat down. "Sharks? Callum repeated as his gaze moved back to the water. He tracked a few waves, automatically monitoring the frequency and intensity. The surf was definitely cooling off as the tide retreated. "Yeah, I guess sharks are always a possibility. But we rarely get them in this area. Much more risk just driving a car or being near fireworks."
A small smile flitted across his face as he considered how that line could have come from Jaws. "It's a nice morning at least." Callum responded, stretching out on the sand as he let the morning's heat warm up his chilled body. "'m Callum." He said quietly. It always felt odd to meet someone new on the island. It never felt like anyone came there, only came into existence having always been there.

Dante was an insomniac and instead of tossing and turning in his bed all night he embraced his inability to sleep and headed to the beach. It'd been a while since he'd caught a sunrise so he might as well enjoy it at the most scenic spot available. The sunrise was therapeutic or maybe that was the weed he was smoking. Either way Dante had found himself in a good headspace even though he was now very sleep deprived.
He'd been watching the surfer as he caught some waves and made sure he looked busy once he was done and started approaching him. He didn't want to be weird and stare at the guy. When he spoke up Dante couldn't help but laugh. "You mean smoke session?" He asked as he proceeded to offer the joint he'd been smoking to him. "I don't surf too afraid of sharks," he explained. Truthfully Dante didn't even know how to swim so it would be a long journey ahead of him before he ever even looked at a surfboard seriously.

The shop was only open by appointment until one, except to those employees who wanted to do some extra practice. But for him, the mornings were reserved for reading, surfing, or drawing. And that morning the crashing waves were irresistible. He sometimes wondered whether the houseboat was actually a long-term form of hypnosis to keep him drawn to the water. Callum zipped up his wetsuit and headed into the ocean as the sun was rising, just nodding at the few regulars he saw there.
He returned to the shore after a while when the taste of salt in his mouth transitioned from pleasant to acidic. He lay down next to his surfboard on the warm sand, wetsuit zipped half-off after chugging some water. Shading his eyes from the sun, Callum glanced over at the person who sat next to him. "Good session?"

Dante had been fully absorbed in his phone and had planned to stay that way until someone spoke up. He didn't even have to look up to know it wasn't any family of his. His entire clan was in Texas and no one had any money to their name let alone millions. Instead Dante couldn't help but roll his eyes before looking in the direction of the person she'd mentioned. They were attractive, he'd give him that, but it wasn't going to go anywhere. "He can buy me a drink but nothing's going to come from it. Been there, done that," Dante explained. He'd been with an older guy before and it'd ended poorly and Dante was too old now to make the same mistake twice.

“hey, so not to be a nosey nancy or anything, but that silver fox in the corner over there has been very boldly checking you out for the last twenty minutes,” april offers coyly, mustering any semblance of subtlety as she nods at the nearby voyeur. “you could be their long lost relative and they’ve come to offer you millions — or they’re building the courage to ask you for a drink. not a bad wednesday night either way, if you ask me.”

History
Dante was never destined to be a Texan. As the youngest of five boys, Dante spent his formative years receiving hand me downs in the form of expectations and life lessons learned through sibling torment. It became clear to his parents at a young age that Dante wasn’t going to follow in the footsteps of his brothers. He wasn’t a natural at football, he had no desire to join the Army, and it was becoming alarmingly clear he wouldn’t knock up his high school sweetheart either.
And Dante had no desire to.
Despite the pigeonhole and constant fights his family tried to keep him in he did what he could to avoid opening up the conversation that would inevitably end in arguments that Dante didn’t want to have. He didn’t hide who he was but that didn’t mean he ever addressed their sneaking suspicions, or looked to have any “coming out” experience with his family. He kept to himself, turning to the internet and the friends he found online, opening up there more than he ever did to someone in Bammel, TX. His bags were packed after graduation and he set out for greener pastures. The world opened up for Dante as he bopped from big city to big city doing everything he could to distance himself from where he grew up. Making friends wasn’t a problem for Dante when he surrounded himself with the right people and was able to experience everything Bammel could’ve never offered.
A life seeking out all the world had to offer became an overindulgence, and an unsustainable lifestyle for Dante. He lived month to month scraping by on what odd jobs he held down and the generosity of friends he acquired, which led to Dante getting tangled up in people he shouldn’t have on multiple occasions. After a particularly bad breakup with a FWB Dante found himself in Avalon. It was sleepy in comparison to the other homes he’d found for himself, and Dante had every intention to only stick around for a summer.
What was supposed to be a three month stay in Avalon quickly turned into two years as Dante formed a new home base in the coastal town. His love for a good time and spending an entire paycheck on a night out no longer was his entire existence nor did he spend all his time in his room holed up on the internet. In Avalon, Dante was able to seek out his equilibrium. He opened himself up to activities he’d been closed minded to in the past. He took up crocheting (something he never even thought of trying back in Texas) and developed an appreciation for the arts. Although he is discovering himself, Dante is beginning to realize he will always be discovering something new. He doesn’t know if he’ll stay in Avalon forever, but is content here for now, and is embracing life in a new way that isn’t an “all or nothing” mindset.
✓ Strong-willed, outspoken, felicific ✘ Pugnacious, vain, particular
Headcanons
Dante’s the youngest of five boys. He doesn’t keep in contact with any of his brothers or his father but occasionally gives his mother a call. He’s never come out to his family and doesn’t plan to. It’s easier they just assume whatever they assume.
Dante doesn’t speak in a southern accent and is very cognizant of the way he speaks. There’s a few words he slips up on but the only time it really comes out is when he’s exhausted or intoxicated.
Dante’s nearsighted and is usually wearing his glasses when he isn’t at home (or hasn’t misplaced them).
Allergic to latex (learned the hard way).
Eats more red meat than he’d like to admit.
Makes his bed only when he knows he’s having company over.
Is the noisy neighbor and is constantly playing music any time he’s home.
Voted most likely to leave town in high school (which he did immediately after graduating).
Took up crochet when he moved to Avalon. He's gotten pretty good at it and has a hoard of yarn slowly taking over his room.
