Blue eyes examined the girl’s visage as she worked her way through the riddle he had just given her. “Well, what is the solution?”

Olivia .
“We must always make sure that there is never any form of doubt between us” she noted as she looked down at their joined hands. The feeling in the pit of her stomach that seemed to occur every time he touched her only seemed to grow as time passed. “Yes, it is the ideal mental image” in all honesty it had been something that had crossed her mind in their time together. At first she had been afraid that she was getting ahead of herself, considering the fact that they were not even technically married. “But it seems that we might be growing a bit ahead of ourselves, considering there’s one step that must be taken before one thinks of children”
“No doubts between us,” he repeated in agreement. Lips curved into a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Despite the fact that he had vivid dreams of how their life could be, of how fulfilling a child would be, there was a fear that marriage would be what sealed the fate that all volunteers who married seemed to find. He had been thinking about it for weeks ---proposing, but he couldn’t make a commitment, not yet, not until he was certain, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the fire starter side of the VFD wouldn’t resurface and claim Olivia’s life ---or that of their future child. Gently, he let go of her hands and leaned slightly forward to press a kiss to her temple. “But… what if I do have a doubt? Then... what?”

Calliope .
The child’s response amuses him and he can’t help the small smile of pride that takes over his lips. He is aware that she has been picking out the colorful sugary bits, leaving the grain-oats behind ---stating that this was for monster-fighting purposes and not for consumption was clever. “Now, are you attempting to befriend them or to induce a sugar rush and subsequent sugar crash to weaken them before you attack them by surprise?”

Jacquelyn .
He follows the utensil’s path as it hovers briefly through the air and then clatters on the floor. It was obvious that her foul mood was a direct reaction to something of his doing. Eyebrows furrowed, puzzlement and perplexity tinting his features as he studies her. The acidity of her manner and the pauses preceding the former librarian’s name seemed to hint at the root of her anger. Did she not approve of them being together? And exactly how aware of their relationship was she? “We should talk,” he finally speaks. “Over tea. Chamomile, preferably. ---Show me to the kitchen.”
