Capra- The Goat.
Leaving the best, last. Since I was a kid, I always admired The Goat. It's joyfyul and adorable. The Goat of New Year's Eve is a traditional Romanian custom in which a person dresses up as a goat and dances, accompanied by a group. The goat symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and the banishment of evil spirits. In the past, it was believed that the goat's dance would bring abundant harvests and health to households for the coming year. The custom is a way to celebrate the rebirth of nature and bring good luck in the new year. The story of the Goat of New Year's Eve comes from the ancient traditions of Romanians, who considered the goat a symbol of fertility and abundance. In Romanian folklore, the goat is seen as a magical being that brings luck, health, and prosperity. The custom evolved as a New Year's ritual, where the goat's dance drove away evil spirits and protected households, bringing prosperity for the year ahead. Over time, this tradition has become a way to celebrate the natural cycles and rebirth.

Ursu' -The Bear.
Big fluffy killer machine. :P The Bear Dance on New Year's Eve is a traditional Romanian custom where a person dressed as a bear, accompanied by a group, dances and mimics the animal's movements. The bear symbolizes strength, regeneration, and the banishment of evil, and its dance is considered a ritual of purification and a good omen for the coming year. The Bear Dance originates from the ancient beliefs of the Dacians, who revered the bear as a sacred animal, symbolizing power and a protector of the community. Over time, the custom became a New Year's ritual associated with rebirth and fertility. It was believed that the bear's movements would drive away evil spirits and bring health and prosperity to households. The bear was also respected for its connection to nature and its cycles.

Batranu'- The Old Man.
They may look scary, but they are fun to look at while they dance.
The masked game on New Year's Eve is a Romanian tradition where participants wear masks and colorful costumes representing animals (the Goat, the Stag) or symbolic characters (the old woman, the old man). They dance and sing in groups, going from house to house to bring luck and prosperity to the hosts. The custom combines ritualistic and comedic elements, serving as a form of spectacle to mark the transition into the new year.

Winter Romanian Folklore: The Goat, The Old Man and The Bear.
Romanian folklore is rich in traditional customs related to agricultural work and shepherding, many of which have been preserved to this day, although their function has changed, focusing more on spectacle. Winter Holidays, celebrated between December 24 and January 7, mark the transition to the New Year, with Christmas and New Year's Eve as central points. They include carols (sung by children and adults), prosperity wishes (Plugușorul, Buhaiul, Sorcova, Zorile), traditions like Vasilca (still practiced in one locality in Olt), mask dances (Capra, Cerbul, Malanca), dances (Căluții, Bumbierii, Călușerii), and star songs. There are also plays such as Vicleimul (about the birth of Jesus) and folk theater with haiduc(outlaw or hero, depending on the situations) or religious themes. These customs vary by region, influenced by historical development and local specifics. Although costumes and performances differ, the essence of the traditions remains unchanged.
