New Music: DJ Spoko - African Warriors ft. Fela Kuti SA’s beatwork maestro DJ Spoko takes on the afrobeat soundscape of Fela Kuti in “African Warriors,” a new loose single which sees the producer sampling Fela’s 1986 “Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense.” For the revisit, Spoko isolates and speeds-up the original’s percussion rhythms, bringing them into his frenzied ‘bacardi house’ production world of pitched-up synthesizers & kwaito-influenced patterns. Spoko is on the heels on having just dropped the expansive 20-track War God LP, which you can grab over here. Stream DJ Spoko’s “African Warriors” featuring Fela Kuti below, no better way to commemorate Felabration day than with a high-octane ode to afrobeat’s drums.

SPOEK MATHAMBO'S FANTASMA SIGN TO SOUNDWAY RECORDS AND ANNOUNCE EP South African quartet Fantasma are to release Eye of the Sun EP through Soundway Records. Made up of a diverse set of musicians the band bring together a wide range of elements from hip-hop to shangaan electro and South African house, psych-rock and punk to township-tech, creating a sound entirely original, fresh, and unique and far greater than the sum of its diverse parts. Formed at the end of 2013, The band unites Spoek Mathambo with Atteridgeville PTA’s “bacardi house” founder and hero DJ Spoko, Cape Town electric-blues band Machineri‘s guitarist Andre Geldenhuys, Durban’s Zulu maskandi multi-instrumentalist Bhekisenzo Cele, and most recently drummer Michael Buchanan. Title track ‘Eye of the Sun’ kicks off at a frenetic pace, with the interplay between Cele’s bass & Geldenhuys psych guitar at the forefront. ‘Shangrila’ is all sunshine and warmth and features South African artist Moonchild on vocals. ‘Sefty Belt’ shimmers over 5 minutes with Geldenhuys’s hazy guitar complementing the soul vocals of guest vocalist Josiahwise Is The Serpentwithfeet. The band will be in the studio this summer recording their debut LP set for release early 2015. Watch this space.
