Documentary Project - Birds of Olympus
Birds of Olympus are, “a heady psychedelic”, band coming from Wicklow Town, Co. Wicklow. They are led by singer and frontman, John ‘Spud’ Murphy, formerly of band Hybrasil. He is joined by Donal Colohan on guitar, Robin Kelly on bass, Dewey Byrne on drums and finally, Michael Evans on keyboard. Last month, the band launched their first EP, ‘Wabi Sabi’, at the Grand Social on Friday 27th April. “It was a fantastic night.”, Spud said. “It was great to launch the EP after 18 months of being together. Of course, members have come and gone in that time, but the journey was amazing.” ‘Wabi Sabi’ can be streamed on Spotify and is available in vinyl form in Track One music store in Wicklow Town. “It’s great for the band to have a presence on Spotify. In this day and age it is probably more important for us to have Spotify streaming our music than having our EP released in CD/Vinyl form.”, Spud added. “However, we would like to have more vinyl copies for sale. We had them on sale on that night of our EP launch at the Grand Social and hope to have them on sale at all of our gigs throughout the summer.” The group practices above Tá Sé’s, a pub in Wicklow Town’s market square. That’s where the magic happens, according to drummer Dewey Byrne. “Practices have been quite intense over the last few months, as you would expect, but very worthwhile. It’s always nice to meet up with the lads for a jam and a few drinks.” The launch of their EP does not mean that the Birds are in for a quiet summer, not by a long shot. They were back in the Grand Social on May 26th, supporting Damo Suzuki and have a busy summer line up awaiting them.
On the June bank holiday weekend in Wicklow Town, Birds of Olympus will be doing an acoustic session in Wicklow, something the band are immensely looking forward to.
“The acoustic session will be a nice change of pace.”, according to bass player Robin Kelly. “The EP is very heavy on synthesisers and amps, so it will be nice to just go back to basics for a while with the acoustic session.”
Keyboard player Michael Evans has mixed views on the upcoming acoustic session.
“As the keyboard player, I doubt I will be featuring much at all in the acoustic session, which is both good and bad. It’s good that I won’t have to be too involved in practice sessions for it, which have been very intense of late with the launch of our EP. But, once the day comes and I won’t be on stage with the lads, I’ll only be wanting to be up there with them.”
The band will then play at the Harbour Bar in Bray on June 23rd, before returning to Bray to play at the Groove Festival on July 7th.
The event that the band are most looking forward to playing at this summer though, is Knockanstockan festival, over the weekend of 27th-29th July.
“Knockanstockan is the big one.” said Spud exuberantly. “We have all attended Knockanstockan at some stage over the years, but none of us have played at it, so it is something that we are really looking forward to. We are expecting a big presence from Wicklow, just like we had at the EP Launch, which we were so grateful for.”

Student Journalist Profile

Journalist at work
Even though Rob is still only a student of journalism, he is making strides towards becoming a full-time journalist already. Rob is keenly involved with college run publications such as, "The Edition", and "The Liberty", and he takes his experiences and expertise from his work there on to his college assignments. Here, he is gathering information for an article he was writing for his statistics assignment. Rob always stays prepared for when he might receive a call regarding a story, so he always carries a notepad around with him, as to not miss out. He is very excited at what the world of journalism will hold for him and as far as he is concerned, graduation cannot come soon enough.

Rob loves playing football. It does not matter if he is playing for his hometown club in Rathfarnham, Leicester Celtic, or simply kicking a ball around with friends in his spare time, Rob loves to have a ball at his feet. Playing football is a good way to relax in between lectures. Rob likes to go across to the astro-turf football pitch across from DIT's Aungier Street campus to play a quick game with his friends or when the weather's nicer, walk down to the green area at Trinity College, before going back into college for his next lecture. To Rob, exercising keeps his mind stimulated and what better way to exercise than play football with your friends.

Academic Environment Here is Rob performing one of the most common tasks a student in today's college world must undertake, presenting to classmates. This is a task which Rob is always eager to perform, as he is a very capable public speaker and has absolutely no qualms about getting up in front of his classmates and presenting slides. Rob immensely enjoys group work too and always pulls his weight when doing so, he will never sit back and let the other people in the group do all of the work. That is not his style.
