The importance of nuance in Intersectionality
One thing that I find incredibly fascinating about human beings is the need to categorize things. This is obvious in different types of sports, genres of music, categories of food, and all subjects of science. In the past, I think humans applied this need to humans and found it necessary to divide groups of people. When looking back at history, it’s obvious to see that, though this may help understand how upbringing affects people, it leads to great division and oppression amongst people. It seems that in every era of history, there is always a victim and an oppressor.
But living life long enough. it’s even more apparent that real life is..well..complicated. Life isn’t as easy as labeling things black and white or putting people into a box that they can’t escape from. The concept of intersectionality is meant to address the preconceived notions of single identity culture. It’s an acknowledgment of human individuality and an understanding that you can’t put people in a box. Race, religion, gender identity, sexuality, attractiveness, socioeconomic situations, economic class, and so much more shape individuals.

This is a great video for those that are learning about intersectionality. Gives the viewer examples of how intersectionality works. It explains that it’s not as simple as adding up all the oppressions and marginalized groups that a person can be a part of.

I really like this picture because it shows all of the subgroups that people can either identify with or belong to. It’s a great visualization that their people’s identity is a lot more complicated than it may appear on the surface. Intersectionality is so important when considering social impact because we can’t just fit people into a box. There needs to be nuance and grace when discussing individuals.

But larger majorities of black Americans say these sites promote important issues or give voice to underrepresented groups, while smaller shares of blacks feel that political engagement on social media produces significant downsides in the form of a distracted public or “slacktivism.”

I find this article incredibly fascinating because it allows space for nuance in the conversation of intersectionality. It takes a case study from an example in history. Taking place in the 1820s in Germany, it analyzes two characters with intersectional identities. Though both were in minority groups, they undoubtedly have prejudices against each other. It begs the question of the flipside of intersectionality. Is it possible for people in minorities to harbor prejudices and discrimination against others? It’s definitely good food for thought.
