Natalie coming into herself in the wilderness in a way that she was never able to in the real world is SO. Like she’s just sooo constantly othered and disrespected and shamed (for her sex life, for her alcohol abuse, for her addiction). but like she still does her part, she’s still kind, she still goes out and tries to provide for the group. and like the way Jackie lashes out at her is so interesting bc like. Back in the real world, Jackie is top of the food chain, and Natalie is bottom of the barrel. She’s so low on the social order that she can be totally dismissed with a quick jab about her sucking dick or whatever. But in the wilderness it’s Natalie who has the skills to provide, it’s Natalie who has a high rank in their new social order. Jackie can barely fetch water, and the other girls are clearly starting to resent the fact that she isn’t contributing. So she lashes her frustration onto Natalie, because she sees her as an easy target. she can go in on natalie and accuse her of not contributing enough (projecting her own insecurity) bc in the past, they’ve all clearly been quick to mock/judge natalie. the only validation of Jackie’s leadership is the other girls willingness to listen to her. Once she loses that, loses their trust and respect, she’s LITERALLY out alone in the cold. Total role reversal. Meanwhile Natalie at the end of season two becomes their chosen leader. like they literally bow to her authority. she’s finally being recognized for her contributions. and then back in the real world she’s right back to being the “burnout” and the addict and the target for everyone’s sideways comments and judgements. Meanwhile Jackie remains celebrated, revered, this perfect tragic lost little girl. even with their parents like. Jackie’s parents leaving her room untouched out of love and reverence, and Natalie’s mol leaving her room untouched out of total apathy. Like idk they’re just such interesting character foils
