Samsung’s Galaxy S9 still comes with a free Chromebook from Amazon
Samsung’s brand-new  Galaxy Note 9  is perfect for people who want an immense amount of storage, a large screen, and some clever S Pen functionality, but its $999 starting price certainly isn’t cheap. It’s worth remembering that you can get a lot of what’s good about the Note 9 in the Galaxy S9, and it’ll cost you less money.    Amazon is running a deal on the S9 and S9 Plus  that tosses in a Samsung Chromebook 3 for free. Starting at $719, you can buy the S9 with the Chromebook 3. If you want the S9 Plus instead, that will cost $839. Both of these prices reflect how much each phone costs to buy unlocked, but you’re also getting a free Chrome OS laptop.  The Note 9 will definitely be a better choice for some, but if you’re loading up on tech...         Continue reading…

Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro firmware update fixes Surface Pen accuracy issues
Microsoft is addressing Surface Pen accuracy issues with its latest Surface Pro tablet. Hundreds of Surface Pro owners  have been complaining  about Surface Pen problems with the device for months, noting that the Surface Pen becomes inaccurate when you rest your hand on the Surface Pro screen. Microsoft has been investigating a fix, and the latest Surface Pro firmware update (available on Windows Update) now addresses problems with palm rejection affecting Surface Pen accuracy.  Affected users have confirmed pen strokes are now fully accurate when resting a hand on the Surface Pro screen. Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro isn’t the only device to experience strange screen-related issues in the Surface lineup. Earlier this year Microsoft...         Continue reading…

YouTube now recommends the best phones for video playback, and it doesn’t suggest an iPhone
At its Note 9 announcement today, Samsung boasted the new phablet is a “YouTube Signature Device” for 2019. If you haven’t heard of that certification before, that’s because it’s a brand-new program YouTube just launched. The  YouTube Device Report  recommends the best smartphones, which it calls “signature devices,” for watching YouTube. These phones feature the ability to watch 360-degree footage, support for high dynamic range, high frame rate, 4K decoding, next-generation codecs, and reliable DRM performance. Google says its team evaluates each device and works with manufacturers to fix video playback performance and capability issues.  The report launches with 18 devices, with the aforementioned Note 9 alongside other popular...         Continue reading…

Microsoft threatened to drop hosting for Gab over hate speech posts
Microsoft has threatened to cease hosting services for the alt-right social network Gab over two anti-Semitic posts, according to  an email published by Gab founder Andrew Torba . The email claims the posts violate Microsoft policy and requests that Gab “promptly take appropriate action to resolve the complaint…within two business days” or hosting service will be suspended. If Gab is forced off Azure, Torba says service “will go down for weeks/months” as the company secures a new provider.  The named posts were written by Patrick Little, a Senate candidate who was  ejected from a GOP convention in May for anti-Semitic views . The  named   posts , which are more than three weeks old, also express intense anti-Semitism and meet any reasonable...         Continue reading…

A lot of customers ask me what kind of laptop is good. Personally I always tell them Lenovo, I have found that Dell’s and HP’s aren’t as reliable. Of course I’m not referring to broken screens or dead power cables. What I’m talking about is hard drives, black screens, dead USB ports and all the other non-user damage type things that happen to laptops. The Lenovo’s usually get replaced to old age instead of being damaged. We have our customers buy quality Lenovo hardware because, as a network administrator I don’t have time for basic PC support. I have IT projects, migrations, instigation and data systems that need my complete concentration. I don’t want to deal with non-reliable hardware. My basic build when I’m talking to a customer or a user about getting a laptop is the following. Start with the basics, an Intel i5 laptop with 8-16GB of ram and 500GB-1TB hard drive (based on price) is the way to go. If you are only using it for internet and word processing you could use an I3, if you are going to be anything more than that stick with an I5. If you want to do something more complex (think CAD, games, running LOTS of programs) then get an I7. Hardware is pretty cheap these days. You can buy new or used – depending on your budget. If you’re a business customer and you want to talk laptops give me a shout. I love that stuff! -Dave from Blogger http://ift.tt/2k7HsjV via IFTTT

Dataforge – a different kind of IT Support
Dataforge consists of 4 techs working their hardest to make sure business IT is working well. We also handle IT projects and manage vendors. What I feel really sets us apart from the rest of the IT industry is the way we handle IT as a whole.
We usually make core business decisions based on what’s good for you and your users. Dan (my brother and founder of Dataforge) will usually tell us to just make decisions ‘as if it was your company’.  Because of this you will receive solutions that make sense. They will be thought out and usually the best option.
The ‘call us when you need us’ model works for some issues that come up in your environment. We understand that, but the main issue is that you don’t get leadership with that. Dataforge offers true enterprise level administration. You have access to our team who are currently running different networks with hundreds of users. We have the experience.
If you would like to know more about how Dataforge can change the way you do business and user technology please reach out – You can always call or email me and we can chat with no obligation.

Alright here we are in the future. It’s 2017 and of course you know my blogging amount dropped to 0 by the end of last year. Time to get back into it – at the same time I think I’m going to get the Dataforge Instagram account back up and running also. Time to keep ‘the forge’ in the news with updates of all the goings on.

Spam.. Spam Never Changes
Like death and taxes spam feels like it’s going to be constant in our lives. People will always try and blast potential customers with deals on sun glass, cloths and everything else. I mean, fax spam is still a thing. With automation and tools today they make sending email blasts to thousands or millions of people a day non-issue.
I have recently picked up a customer who is getting spammed, a lot.  We put in a solid spam filter that used the main RBL’s (Real Time Black Lists) and that cut the spam down to hundreds instead of thousands. Next we put in a select recipients list and it dropped even further.
These are not hard changes, but it seems this company’s last IT firm couldn’t resolve the issue.  Ok, I’m not saying they will never get spam, but they won’t get hundreds a day. They will get a few, a reasonable amount. We also now have spam visibility so when spam comes in we can do something about it.
I personally use my Dataforge email address as my primary email. Dataforge is my family’s business I have had the luck of being behind an enterprise level spam filter since I was in my early 20s. I don’t even think about signing up for ebooks, free trials or listing my email address publically.  I mean look at this blog – If I was worried about spam I wouldn’t list my full contact details here.
If you are having a problem with spam and need some actual advice on how to get it resolved – send me an email and let’s chat.
