25 April 1963

Fiona Adams is assigned by her editor at Boyfriend magazine to photograph unknown (to her) band The Beatles. After piling into a taxi, Adams climbed down into a bomb crater and asked them to jump.

"They were wearing Cuban-heeled boots and there was lots of rubble around up there, so it probably wasn’t very safe, but they did it beautifully. Each of them jumped in a different style, as if they’d been practising."

24 April 1976

The Beatles are offered $3000 to appear on NBC's Saturday Night. While, coincidentally, John and Paul were watching together during one of Paul and Linda's unannounced drop-ins at the Dakota, they did not end up going down to the studio to claim their check. This writer is uncertain whether two Beatles would qualify for Lorne Michaels' deal, but it seems unlikely.

Paul and Linda did not join John and Yoko for the late night airing of The Time Machine, so we'll never know if they would have contemplated time travel together.

The Nerk Twins perform the first of only two gigs at the Fox & Hounds in Caversham.

John Lennon officially changes his middle name from 'Winston' to 'Ono' in a rooftop ceremony at the Apple office.

21 April 1963

The Beatles play their only date at London's Pigalle Club. Reportedly, because an advertising oversight, the audience was almost entirely comprised of Jewish people since only the Jewish Chronicle carried the notice.

20 April 1964

Paul McCartney and Isla Blair film a scene for A Hard Day's Night that does not make it into the final cut. Paul says this was because there were too many tricky lines. Dick Lester says it was because it affected the pacing of the film. The Internet thinks it's because Paul couldn't keep his eyes "up here."

For her part, Ms Blair's only recorded complaint was that in offering her a ride home, Paul inadvertently subjected her to the violent jealousy of the group of fans gathered around his car, and refused his gallant offer the next day.

19 April 1968

The Beatles' new business venture, Apple Music, advertises for musical submissions on this day. The photo is not of a new musical discovery but of Alistair Taylor in a rented costume singing "When Irish Eyes are Smiling." The campaign was designed by Paul McCartney.

Many tapes were submitted. No acts were ever signed using this scouting method.

I have no idea what sort of car Mr Taylor actually drove.

The Beatles find out that Jane Asher is a redhead on this day, upon meeting her in real life and not black and white.

On this date, in the exclusive club Les Ambassadeurs, a tall man looks for his girlfriend in the crowd.

They were filming the disco scene in A Hard Day's Night. The girlfriend was noted actress Charlotte Rampling. I would be looking for her, too.

No one really knows what happened on this day, because it's probably not true that both John Lennon AND George Martin came up with the backwards vocals on "Rain" independently.

In his first solo television appearance, Paul McCartney predicts he'll retire in a year or two. David Frost counters it'll be more like 2010.

Both are dead wrong.

Two year old Argentinian native Ichiro makes his stage debut in Uruguay on McCartney's On the Run tour. It is unknown how Ichiro is doing today, but we hope he has retained the "Macca bounce" he has already perfected.

The Beatles arrive at their first Rolling Stones gig wearing matching suede coats, the envy of which causes Mick Jagger to alter the course of the Stones' future (and music history) by deciding they need to get out of R&B and into Rock.

13 April 1963

The Beatles met Cliff Richard for the first time at a house party given by Shadows' guitarist Bruce Welch. They did not immediately explode into a rivalry, though in later years both Cliff and Paul would claim that they never got to record in studio 2 of Abbey Road because the other one was always in there. (Somehow they still made records.)

I want to make a Ric from The Young Ones joke but no one will get it.
