the tension finally eased by a fraction, “ well, “ lottie said matter-of-factly, “ i don’t want to do anything with it unless you approve, okay ?? “ she stepped away from him to look in the open door of another conference room. it was empty, “ we can listen in here, “ she said, already heading inside, plugging her phone in and curling up on one of the plush leather chairs, waiting for him to get settled before pressing play.
slinking into the conference room, he plopped on the couch next to hers, sitting up stiffly. the room’s speakers flooded with the voice he knew so well, her voice soothed the rest of his nerves. “lottie, this is really good.” he said, his eyes lighting up. “you’re phenomenal.” he meant it.

that’s just not true, “ she insisted, reaching out to touch his arm only for a second before crossing her arms loosely, “ what happened happened. it’s not anybody’s fault that everything was just… the wrong place and the wrong time. i don’t hold that against you – come on, dave. i want you to hear it, “ her voice was firm, crumbling only slightly near the end of her little speech, “ and if you hate it, i won’t release it. you’re a private person, i’m not gonna take that away from you, you know ?? i’m not gonna take everything that we had and give it to the whole world. not if it’s not okay with you. “
her touch was like an electric shock, familiar, yet foreign. it took every power in him to restrain himself from lacing his fingers in hers again. like old times. “it’s your single, lottie.” he replied, “you can do whatever you want with it.” he said sincerely. he knew she worked hard for this, he knew she poured her everything into her work. “if it means that much to you, i’ll listen to it. and i’m already sure i’ll love it.” just as much as he still loved her.

“ wait, dave- no, it’s- “ lottie exhaled, “ it’s not a breakup song, “ she clarified hastily. exhaling, she said, “ i wrote it when we were together, actually. but, i mean, the album isn’t… it’s not about dissing you. you didn’t do anything wrong. “
“i did everything wrong,” he mumbled candidly, cheeks flushed. he took a step back, trying to compose himself. “sorry, it’s just -” he said clearing his throat, “i know this is not the right time or place to say any of this.” he said shoving his hands in his pockets.

arm instinctively wrapping around the taller man’s neck, preventing the ultimate tumble; sure, she was good at her feet, but not at all at walking “ what do you think? i was merely escaping my musician’s duties when i ran out for coffee and i saw this dog at the door of the coffee place that made me think of you. ” her eyes differ from his, observing the busy crowd before smiling once more at him “ can you go for a walk with me, or are you too hollywood busy for little ol’ me? ”
“for you? never.” he chuckled, pinching her cheek. “that’s very thoughtful of you, ari.” he said, a smile forming on his lips. gesturing to the director for a lunch break, dave offered his arm to the brunette. “shall we?”

“ that’s awesome, d, “ she said genuinely. she was eager to let him think she was doing well when, in reality, she was a bit - no, a definite mess. “ yeah. are you ?? doing well, i mean ??how is everything ?? “ the awkward, strained energy between them was palpable, and only lessened when he teased her, his expression familiar. she hadn’t heard that tone of voice from him for ages, “ maybe, “ her face flushed as she raised her eyebrows, grimacing slightly, “ it’s… sort of about you ?? i mean, it’s not your name or anything, but– yeah. “
“oh, i see.” he said, finally looking away. his cheeks reddening, his eyes downcast. he was sure it was about how much he hurt her. now it was going to be on every radio, every speaker. “i know it’ll be a hit,” he said with a wistful smile. “it’s you after all.”

cameras, lights, heavy movement between takes and massive amounts of people working, in a symphony she could barely handle herself. her eyes brightly lit up whenever she saw this behind the set at a broadway show, but never film itself. there was something disturbing, almost like a negative vibe in it that musical theatre didn’t. half of her wonderedhow dave could handle it. her lips twisted in a soft smile, hand patting softly the other’ shoulder “ surprise ! ” she shouted, other hand raising to show small carton with coffee cups “ got a minute? ”
weaving through the set, dave picked up a script, flipping through its pages. a faint tap on his shoulder broke his concentration, as he turned around to see a familiar brunette smiling back at him. “ari, hey!” he said smiling warmly, scooping her up into a hug. “what brings you here?”

“ so do you, “ she replied almost immediately, latching onto the last thing he said like a lifeboat. she swore she felt her heartbeat against her ribcage, a mixture of nostalgia, guilt, and panic washing over her, “ – i just was here with my producers, “ she gestured vaguely to the conference room, “ just listened to a final cut of my first single, and it’s… i’m excited about it. what are you doing here ?? “ something important, she assumed, something actor-y.
“yeah, i’m actually recording some voice-over lines for an animated film,” he replied, taking a step closer in a feat of feigned confidence. “i’m really glad you’re doing well.” he said earnestly, drumming his fingers against the narrow glass walls. “you think i could give it a listen?” he teased.

lottie, ever a whirlwind of blonde hair and starbucks cups, felt like maybe she was on top of the world. she’d been racked by anxiety over pulling her upcoming album together, but she’d just heard the final cut of her first single and it was perfect. she found herself alone as she exited the conference room where her manager and producer sat, still making small talk. it was funny how the universe worked sometimes, she thought, because seeing dave deluca - the subject of that upcoming single - down the hall seemed much more like a cosmic punishment than a mere coincidence. she wasn’t sure if he’d seen her, but turning around and walking away wasn’t exactly an option, “ – dave, hey. hi, “ she said, taking a few steps toward him with a goofy, awkward smile.
dave turned a corner into conference room b when a familiar face stopped him in his tracks. she was moving closer to him now, as he nervously tugged on his shirt. “hey,” he said back, letting out a nervous chuckle. “lottie, it’s been ages since i last saw you,” he said offering a small smile. “you look great.”

“It’s so fucked-like do you know how hard it is to find a good stylist in Hollywood, someone that doesn’t just throw clothing at you but really dresses you.” Hands flapping to her side in clear frustration. A sleek iphone is pressed to her ear as she unleashes a string of complaints at whoever is on the other line. “And she just dresses herself, she picks that kind of outfit for herself by herself. God I fucking hate the red carpet.” A brief pause as she turns on her heel and realizes she’s not alone, immediately hanging up Lou regards the other person. “How much of that did you hear?”
“only everything, really.” he admitted, with a nervous chuckle. backing away from her direction. he had only wanted to go to the bathroom and had run into the blonde after a series of wrong turns. “you okay? you seemed pretty heated.”

The music was blaring and a slight haze illuminated the atmosphere around them as a result of the flashing disco lights nearby. A large intoxicated crowd crammed around the bar but if you were anyone who was anyone in this city, you would know it was just another Monday night for the socialites. “Okay, first rounds on me.” Suri laughed sliding her credit card over to the bartender. Despite her early call time the next morning, she was determined to have fun tonight. “Cheers.” She saluted, an odd yet quirky habit she acquired when she was tipsy, then quickly pushed the glass to her lips, allowing the harsh liquor slide down her throat.
“uh oh, someone’s tipsy,” dave chuckled. recognizing his neighbor’s drunk habits. he took a sip from his beer, tilting his head back. “someone’s gonna regret this in the morning,” he teased.

“ undoubtedly, ” she replied, trying to prevent herself from acknowledging that brief spark of… something she felt when he pulled that subtle stunt. “ it’ll probably be the cover for all of the ‘royal au’ fanfictions. if only it were that easy, hm ? ” – to become royal.
“well, you are music royalty, that’s even better.” he said with a soft smile. dave had done countless romantic scenes with actresses before, but walking hand-in-hand with dahlia made his stomach do somersaults.
the cameras flashed in every direction, momentarily stunning him. “you doing okay? we can head back in if you’d like,” he whispered. putting a protective arm over her shoulder.

it wasn’t enough to be seen together, dahlia knew this. she also knew this was strictly business – that this was a means of promotion and that they’d eventually stage a mutual and amicable breakup ( so as to avoid either one being painted as a villain ) and that they’d find real people ( and perhaps already had and were simply unable to be seen with them )and that that would be that. “ i’d love nothing more than to be a tmz sidebar photo, ” she mused, holding a hand out. it was business – she had to remember that. it was on repeat. indulging in anything real, saying anything – it would make a mess of things. their faux breakup would come sooner than scheduled. “ our teams are innovative, truly – bridging the gap between music and film, genius. ” it had been said in a near whisper to ensure no one would hear her talking about their actual status, but she no longer knew what to talk about.business. talking about business seemed like such a safe route.
her hand was soft in his as he walked through the streets. slipping on his sunglasses, he heard the familiar click of cameras around him. he raised the back of her palm to his lips for a gentle kiss. “you think that will go on every ‘Davia’ fans’ blog?” he whispered, letting out a low chuckle.
