Things You Need To Know About Getting a Medical Sales Job
In today's economic times the media makes it appear to be job opportunities are slim to none. The news likes to report on the negatives by only sharing which companies are shedding, who's going out of business, or who's moving their headquarters overseas? And while this stuff does happen, there are still job opportunities for those willing to figure hard, improve their skills, and hone their talents. This is particularly true in medical sales, which is still a growing industry with many lucrative sales jobs. But, one needs to know where to find the medical sales jobs and how to properly position themselves to get one.
If you've got the right personality, a lot of drive, and know-how to present yourself properly you could be the perfect candidate for a job in medical sales or pharmaceutical sales. So as a team of former hiring managers in the medical sales industry, we present the Top 5 Things You Need to Know about Getting a Medical Sales Job:
1) Leverage Social Media to Increase Your Opportunities.
It's no secret that the use of Social Media is changing the landscape of how businesses are looking at their market, their consumers, and their futures. In the world of sales, there is no better Social Media tool available. If you are not utilizing this vehicle as a way to promote yourself, your background, and finding new opportunities - you're missing out. So start building relationships with key industry people. Also, do not forget that employers are beginning to use Facebook to conduct a touch reconnaissance before hiring candidates. Re-think your main Facebook profile picture and therefore the accessibility of all of your profile pictures.

2) The Medical Sales Industry is Still Growing.
So as the healthcare industry continues to grow, so will need new for new drugs, durable medical equipment, and medical devices. And at the end of the day, someone has got to be out on the streets selling these products to meet the demand.
3) Be Assertive in Finding Your Opportunity.
The recruiters medical sales and the industry are extremely lucrative, but also incredibly competitive. With all of the people out there who are looking for new jobs or looking to upgrade their career status/income - you have to do more to make yourself known. Conduct your research and find creative ways to reach out and connect directly with the medical sales or pharmaceutical sales hiring managers of the places you'd like to work. Remember though; be creative and be savvy - not pushy.
4) Online Pharmaceutical "Certifications" are a Waste of Your Money.
Over the past decade, we've interviewed many candidates who were trying to interrupt into the medical sales and pharmaceutical sales industry. Rarely did any of us run across a candidate that has one of these so-called "pharmaceutical certifications", but when we did it had about a 0% influence as to whether or not we were going to hire them.
We believe strongly in this because of two reasons: First, certified by whom? Who is this governing body that "certifies" a candidate and what are the criteria in which they have to abide by? Secondly, what are the credentials of the people writing the curriculum? No one knows who these people are, what industry experience they have (if any), and whether or not their programs are up to date? In other words, what's to stop your neighbour from putting up a website and creating their own on-line "pharmaceutical sales certification program" and charging people hundreds of dollars?
5) Identify the Right Medical Sales Recruiters
In the medical sales and pharmaceutical sales industry, the majority of the jobs available usually are not posted online. They're sometimes filled internally or quickly filled by medical sales industry recruiters. It's a recruiter's job to match up job openings with the proper candidates and employers are being more selective now about which recruiters they work with. So it's in your best interest to figure with those that are best connected to the hiring managers. These recruiters are invested in your success and therefore will give you every tool available to ensure your success, because if you win - they win.
Major Tips to Getting a Career in Medical Sales
Background
Ideally, you would like a science degree. Some people will tell you that you simply don't need a science degree to achieve success in medical sales, but that's only partially true. In some cases, candidates with very strong sales backgrounds have gotten by with it, but they nearly always have science classes under their belts (beyond just the minimum they needed to graduate). you've got to understand what you're talking about to sell with credibility and confidence-so if you would like to achieve success selling medicine, science, and technology, you've got to understand medicine, science, and technology. Medical sales training programs are often helpful (in the way that each one training is valuable), but won't help an otherwise bad candidate.
Experience
You would like sales experience and sales skills to land employment in medical sales. However, you do not necessarily need to have medical sales experience. What you want to be ready to do is demonstrate how the sales process you're good at will translate into your required area of health care sales.
Complete a field preceptorship (job shadowing). It shows that you are simply willing to try something that you won't get purchased to land this job. It demonstrates your initiative, determination, and strategic thinking. If you're short on experience, it helps fill in a number of the weak areas. It's great for your resume because it furnishes you with handy keywords which will get your resume noticed.
Read sales books and obtain sales training. These will assist you within the interview, and if you'll communicate that you've got done this stuff, it'll highlight your commitment to stepping into medical sales.
Find medical sales reps or managers who will offer you an informational interview. It is a fine line to steer because you do not want to require an advantage and switch it into posing for employment, but an honest informational interview will offer you tremendous insight into the sector.
Presenting yourself as a top-quality candidate
Use your network. Work the network you have already got, and establish a profile on LinkedIn. Join groups that are relevant to the recruiters medical sales areas you're curious about and participate in. Follow influential recruiters on Twitter.
Concentrate on your resume. Transcend the fundamentals of getting a beautiful, easy-to-read, professional resume. You want to have the proper keywords on your resume (that will get picked up by the Applicant Tracking Systems of medical sales recruiters), also as a robust resume objective. Highlight your technical degree, if you've got one.
Improve your interview skills. Polish your interview skills. Be ready for behavioural interview questions by having stories ready that highlight your skills. Do your homework before the interview so that you've got questions of your own to ask, dress appropriately and watch your visual communication, and use your sales skills to shut the interview for the work.
Consider hiring a medical sales recruiter for custom consulting
It's the quickest way available for you to find out what it is that you need to do to land a medical sales job. This kind of career coaching will also show you how to highlight your best assets and how to deal with potential drawbacks (or even turn them into an advantage).
