When the waters retrieved, Tata and Nene descended from their ahuehuetl boat and found the flood had left behind dead fish. Hungry, the old couple picked them to eat. In that moment, the mamalhuaztli, the fire sticks, fell from the Heaven, and Tata and Nene decided to cook the fish in a fire, unaware that, when they started it, they were also starting the movement of time, creating the first New Fire ceremony. A great column of smoke rose to the Heavens, smoking the house of Citlalinicue and Citlaltonac, Our Mother and Our Father, who, furious, sent Tezcatlipoca down to the Earth. As punishment, Tezcatlipoca cut Tata and Nene's heads and placed them on their bottoms, turning them into dogs. Their transgression had also been to eat the bodies of fish who had formerly been human.
