Police officers are written in all types of ways, the most popular being corrupt and generally evil. ARSON vs PYROMANIA

While I was watching Beyond Scared Straight yesterday, one kid was in trouble for stealing and pyromania. Essentially, the kid would just take a lighter to things and set them on fire, which also included a gas tank, for the hell of it. Then, it occurred to me that some people might not know or understand the difference between arsonists and pyromaniacs. So, I decided to write up a short little guide on the differences.

A How To: Playing a Firefighter

First off, that title is false because there is no one way to play a person no matter their occupation. I just… didn’t know what else to put, so there you go. Anyway, as aforementioned, this isn’t so much as how to play a firefighter as each one has their own personality traits, character, speech pattern, mannerisms, etc. but more like a guide or resource to the occupation firefighting. Please take note that different fire stations in different countries and states would–well–differ from one another. The goal of this post is to basically acquaint or at least get a gist of what firefighters do. (Note: they do more than save cats on trees and play chess!)

Disclaimer: I am not a firefighter, so I don’t know personally what firefighters go through. I have the privilege of being friends with one who constantly helps me as I play my firefighter character. Thus, I probably can’t answer your questions, if any. None of the links are by or written by me.

I’m about five thousand percent sure that there are more to firefighters than all of this and that there are about a gazillion more links and books on Google that are accessible, but hopefully this covers the basic gist of it. Again, this is not a guide to play any one character! It would be fun to see more diverse and different characters with this occupation!

Introduction

This guide focuses on common inaccuracies you’ll find in media and how to avoid making the same mistakes. Just as a disclaimer, the things I point out are based on my own experiences at a well-run, somewhat well-staffed hospital. Procedures are different from hospital to hospital. If you’re writing a poorly staffed, overcrowded hospital in the slums of a large city, there may be large differences from what I have written here.

Getting every single detail accurate is a hard thing to do and nearly impossible given the fact that procedures vary from place to place. The least you can do is make an effort to get most things as accurate as possible. If things aren’t accurate, it isn’t believable for those who know the truth and it distorts the reader’s view of things.

I know that you may be tempted to forgo research and just read guides like this one, but you need to do your research. If you search tumblr’s tags for specific things like “PICC line” or “nursblr”, you can find a lot personal experiences and resources to help you learn more about the topic.

What Is Preeclampsia?

Formerly called toxemia, preeclampsia is a condition that pregnant women develop. It is marked by high blood pressure and a high level of protein in the urine. Preeclamptic women will often also have swelling in the feet, legs, and hands. This condition usually appears during the second half of pregnancy, often in the latter part of the second or in the third trimesters, although it can occur earlier.

Writing Reference: Sprains and Strains

NOTE: I’m using this medical research on sprains for future reference. It’s especially useful when I have a character that is a healer. It’s also good to know for a zombie apocalypse (or any other apocalypse).

Introduction:

Sprains and strains are usually minor injuries that often result from sports, exercise, or other physical activity. Sprains refer to an injury to a ligament (the connective tissue that links bones together at joints). Sprains happen most often in the ankle, knee, elbow, or wrist. Strains are tears in muscle tissue. They happen most often in the muscles that support the calf, thigh, groin, and shoulder. Sometimes sprains and strains can be severe, needing weeks of rehabilitation.

   HOW TO: PLAY A CHARACTER WITH ASTHMA

Asthma: A respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing.

Why:  Because I always see it played wrong, and it sucks. But, I can’t blame people since all we see of asthma is geeky kids or something for someone to get over when they get superpowers. So here we are, into just about everything I have to share so your characters can be realistic.

Qualifications: What up? This guide is being written by someone who has had asthma all their life and a lot of their family members have asthma. The guide will focus on severe asthma both controlled and uncontrolled that starts at birth, and does not go away or completely controlled after a few years.
