it's really getting down to the last few squares! i stamped 2 spots in April with a nice pastel blue for Easter 馃檪 and i got a bingo yay! 馃帀
20th century speculative fiction: Small Gods by Terry Pratchett
non-fiction: learn something new: Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green
i had the hardest time finding a book for the speculative fiction prompt. i know the original post mentions early discworld books count as speculative fiction, but i was so confused because i'm like "it's fantasy?" i thought speculative fiction was some super niche genre that was outside sci-fi/fantasy/romance/etc. it wasn't until i finally realized that speculative fiction was a SUPER genre that contained sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc. that i realized how early discworld books fit the prompt! it took a while but yay me for using my single brain cell! 馃槀
and i've been watching John Green on his vlogbrothers YT channel, so i knew he was involved w/ tuberculosis education, research, and care. Everything Is Tuberculosis really does teach w/out sounding like a textbook and Henry's story reminds us that this disease is still here and relevant.
only 4 more stamps to go! i think the recommendation one is going to be the hardest because i don't want to talk to people. that and the zine one. i'm still trying to finish my zine. wish me luck! 馃憤
thank you @batmanisagatewaydrug! good luck to everyone with their bingo cards! happy reading! 馃グ

Dear MAGA Catholics,
You can't be a good MAGA follower and a good Catholic at the same time.
Just in case you're confused.

Okay so this is a big deal
To me, and to a significant subset of Sir Terry's fans (including most of you who've found this by the tags), his writing is serious commentary on the human condition - politics, prejudice, self-control, revenge vs. justice, religion, idealism, faith in people vs. cynicism, and more - dressed up with fantasy settings and a hefty leavening of humor to make it fun to read. And it is WILDLY fun to read, actual laugh-out-loud or at least a snicker averaging about every page.
But there's this common idea among the "important literature" people that fun and funny books are not also worthwhile or important in the same way.
This is a Discworld book being released WITH ACADEMIC COMMENTARY and AS A PENGUIN CLASSIC. That's a HUGE amount of recognition.

i think the key difference between george lucas鈥檚 star wars and disney鈥檚 star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that鈥檚 how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can鈥檛 have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you鈥檙e a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can鈥檛 take sides. you can鈥檛 decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.

ITS GREAT LAKES AWARENESS DAY!!!!!
On this excellent day, be aware that this is the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world, covering over 95,000 square miles and reaching depths of over a thousand feet. They are beautiful freshwater seas.
Also when you die in these lakes, the very cold, oxygen-poor conditions at the bottom preserves you perfectly for all eternity. You will not rot and nothing will eat you. You will exist for as long as the Great Lakes do. Many shipwrecks still have the crew on board. Be Aware.
