I find it fascinating (derogatory) how the general fandom conversation has shifted from "this woman is getting in the way of our gay ship and she's USELESS and ANNOYING and WE DON'T LIKE HER!" to this weird "no actually she's just not involved in her own relationships because she's too cool and special and awesome and a girlboss". But the problem is that there's not actually a veritable difference there. People still aren't engaging with her as a fully-fledged character. Like sure man calling her a girlboss is fine it's whatever but let that lead somewhere else. Engage with her. Can you actually name any of her character traits or are you just blindly praising her so that you can focus on shipping the guys in the background without feeling bad about it

John reads the same page ten times over before turning it. His thumb hovers above the handwriting and the drawings, mindful not to tarnish the brittle paper with his ash-stained fingertips. The handwriting is nicer than his own, neater and more purposeful with the darkness of the lead in certain areas and the thoughtful shading to highlight details John wouldn't even think to search for.

He lingers on certain pages, like the one about Abigail that makes him scoff for only the cicadas and restless deer to hear. Selfishly, he’s grateful Abigail was enough of a fool back then to look to him rather than Arthur.

Among old jealousy and rivalry is the ever-present sense of inadequacy that festers just as violently as it did when John was somehow more of a fool than he is now.

Even in death, John would find a way to be mad at him. When he comes to the final page, all that anger churns his stomach.

John, protect Abigail and Jack.
