âHarper! Harper, Iâm home!â Davis kicked his shoes off and threw his jacket on the hook as Harperâs dog Duke bounded up to greet him. Finding an apartment that would let them have a dog as big as Duke in New York had pretty much taken Davis begging the landlord and putting down a giant extra security deposit, but it was worth it. Harper and Davis had moved out to New York for the summer to help Jude with a movie he was directing. It was convenient enough for Harper and her career, and Davis had been working with various producers since college and was ready to start pushing to work on his own, so the experience of helping his brother with the film was something he definitely couldnât pass up.Â
âDuke whereâs our girl?â The mid-twenty something asked, leaning down and petting the dog. After a second of so of getting Davisâ attention, Duke gave a little shake and wandered down the hall toward the bathroom. Davis followed after him, wondering if Harper was even in the apartment or if she was stuck at a shoot, âHarper? Babe are you here?â
Davis peeked into the bedroom and didnât see her, so he stuck his head inside the bathroom. There she was, sitting on the edge of the tub, chewing on her lip like she always did when she was nervous. âWhatâs wrong?â Concern rose up in Davis the minute he saw his girlfriend. Davis knew every little habit Harper had and what every look she gave meant. They were high school sweethearts, the type of couple that spent all of their free time together, and they were best friends. Glancing around the room while waiting for Harperâs answer, Davis noticed three pregnancy tests sitting on the counter. âHarper? The doctor told us itâs because weâre too stressed right now. Weâre going to wait until after the summer, right? Weâll start trying again when everythingâs settled down.âÂ
Harper and Davis were ready for a baby. They both made good money, their marriage was more than stable, and they were ready to start their own family. They wanted a house that was never empty, full of noise and life. The issue, of course, was the actual making a baby part. They had been trying for months and although they were doing everything right, Harper still hadnât gotten pregnant yet. After various doctor visits, they had decided to take a break from trying. The whole process was so stressful, and every time they took a test and it came out negative, they ended up feeling deflated. It was a vicious cycle.Â
Davis moved to pick up the tests and throw them out, sure that it was just another disappointment. He was a little worried about Harper and how stressed this whole âletâs have a babyâ thing was making the both of them. Halfway to the trash, Davis looked down at the pregnancy test. Two pink lines were visible on the first one. He stopped dead in tracks, his eyes suddenly searching the other two tests. Both of the others had two pink lines as well. Davis was frozen, staring at them. All three were positive. All three were positive. All three were positive!
âHarper!â Davis snapped quickly to attention, his voice filled with excitement. âYouâre pregnant!â Elation ran through the twenty-five year old. After all the stress and tension, he held three pregnancy tests that made it all worth it. He dropped them back on the counter and took a step toward Harper, his face breaking out in a grin as he grabbed her hands and pulled her into a hug. âWeâre going to have a baby!â Davisâ thoughts were moving a million miles a second as he kissed Harper. âWe need to make a doctorâs appointment...or a few, maybe we want to test out different doctors and we should see what else we need to do and figure out where we want to be living when the baby is due and...holy shit, Harper, weâre going to have a baby!âÂ
Davis was already freaking out, but in the best way. There was a million things to do and he was ready to take it all on. Harper was his best friend, his wife, and now they were going to have a child together. Their high school dreams were literally coming true. He couldnât wait to pamper Harper and take care of her while she was pregnant, couldnât wait to tell their parents and Jude and Chuck, and most of all he couldnât wait to star this journey with her.Â

DARPER - Future post
The early morning light peaked through the kitchen window and fell on to a pretty brunette woman holding a toddler. Davis stood there in the doorway, soaking in the scene as his wife popped a few pieces of toast into the toaster and moved to put their daughter into her high chair. Emma was their youngest chid, and was the only pregnancy the couple had not planned on. After Parker and Preston, Davis and Harper had all but decided the addition of twins to their already family of three was more than enough to keep them busy. Life happened, though, (as well as a few bottles of wine) and nine or so months later Emma was born. She was the only girl, a delicate little thing thrust into the chaotic household that included her three brothers. Emma was always the center of attention, and it was hard to believe that Davis and Harper had ever considered their family complete without the little girl.Â
âGood morning,â Davis finally greeted as Harper slid Emma into the high chair. He grinned ear to ear, snaking his arms around Harperâs waist and pulling her into him. âNow tell me, how is it that you are as perfect right now at this very second as you were the first time I saw you in high school?â Somehow managing to kiss Harper while keeping a smile on his face, Davis felt his heart flutter. To this day Davis still sometimes had trouble processing the fact that Harper Adams, the girl he had a crush on for his entire high school career, had fallen as madly in love with him as he was with her. Everything about Harper captivated Davis, even after four kids and almost two decades of being together. The ups, the downs, and everything in between had only made him love her even more. Just the very brush of his skin against Harperâs sent his heart raising and fireworks going through him as it was their first kiss in her pool all over again.Â
Leaning in close, Davis kissed the tip of his wifeâs nose, unable to keep his lips off of her...it was no wonder they had ended up with the bonus baby. âYou know, Iâve been thinking that we should take a trip...renew our wedding vows with the kids there...maybe Hawaii? Somewhere nice and warm.â The idea brought Davis back to the night he proposed to Harper. It was incredibly unplanned. He had just gotten back from his semester abroad, it hadnât even been two weeks since theyâd been back living in their apartment together, when it hit him. Why the hell was he waiting to propose? Davis knew even that at 19, hell he knew when he was 16, that Harper was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Come hell or high water they were going to be together. Davis went out and drained his savings account to buy a ring he thought was suitable and then had her come and meet him in their special spot right near campus. Nervous as hell, scared that she would think he was rushing into things or worry about what his parents would say, Davis proposed. They were young. He knew that his mother and father would want them to wait, to finish college, but he just didnât care. What was the point in waiting when in his heart he knew he had found the one?Â
The thumping of little feet came just before Davis was about to share his reminiscing with his wife, interrupting the quiet morning peace. âPARKER STOLE MY LIGHT SABER!!!!â âMOMMA IT WAS MINE TO BEGIN WITH!â âDAD CANâT YOU KEEP THE TWINS OUT OF MY ROOM?â Normally Davis would have shook his head, feeling exasperated, but today he kept the smile on his face. âBoys, mom and I have no idea what youâre saying when youâre all talking at once alright? Sit down, Iâll get you breakfast and then we can just go and buy new light sabers, alright? One for everyone. Even Emma,â turning to pour all the cereal, Davis gave his wife a wink. Maybe bribery wasnât the best parenting technique, but he was in a good mood.Â
Pouring milk over the bowls of cereal, Davis looked up to find his family laughing, a rare moment of total peace in the Baker home. How lucky he was to have not only this family that loved him, but his parents and twin brother as well....life was very good in the Baker family, that was for sure.Â
