Mindfulness of Current Emotions
I need to do this skill more often…it helps, especially when I’m dissociative in anxiety…
(Emotion Regulation Handout 22) Mindfulness of Current Emotions:
Letting Go of Emotional Suffering
Observe your emotion
•• Step back and just notice your emotion. •• Experience your emotion as a WAVE, coming and going.•• Now imagine surfing the emotion wave.
•• Try not to BLOCK or SUPPRESS the emotion. •• Don’t try to GET RID of or PUSH away the emotion.
•• Don’t try to KEEP the emotion around.•• Don’t HOLD ON to it. •• Don’t AMPLIFY it.
Practice mindfulness of body sensations
•• Notice WHERE in your body you are feeling emotional sensations.•• Experience the SENSATIONS as fully as you can. •• Observe how LONG it takes before the emotion goes down.
Remember: you are not your emotion
•• Do not necessarily ACT on your emotion. •• Remember times when you have felt DIFFERENT.
Practice loving your emotion
•• RESPECT your emotion. •• Do not JUDGE your emotion. •• Practice WILLINGNESS. •• Radically ACCEPT your emotion.

“Cycles exist because they are excruciating to break. It takes an astronomical amount of pain and courage to disrupt a familiar pattern. Sometimes it seems easier to just keep running in the same familiar circles, rather than facing the fear of jumping and possibly not landing on your feet.”

I’m so tired of seeing posts which basically go “you know… you may be mentally ill but that’s not an excuse to let your mental illness affect your life or productivity in any way” presented like it’s some hot new take and not just regurgitated ableism that the vast majority of the worlds population already subscribe to.

Kill the idea that depression and anxiety aren’t real mental illnesses.
Kill the idea that depression and anxiety aren’t serious mental illnesses.
Kill the idea that people who “only” have depression and/or anxiety need to stop whining and be grateful that it isn’t worse.
Kill the idea that depression and anxiety are normal things everyone deal with.
Kill the idea that people with depression and anxiety aren’t really sick.
Kill the idea that people with depression and anxiety are “basically neurotypical.”
Quit saying “just depression and anxiety” or “only depression and anxiety” like depression and/or anxiety isn’t serious and worthy of attention by itself.
As a schizophrenic person myself I definitely get the frustration that so much mental health awareness only focuses on depression and anxiety, as well as the frustration relating to the lack of support, advocacy and understanding surrounding more stigmatized and rarer disorders.
But let’s not act like anxiety and depression can’t be serious mental illnesses which ruin and end lives every day, cause they are.

Too many people are like “I totally support mentally ill people as long as their mental illness doesn’t affect their functioning level, life or behavior in any visible way”

Having a shitty opinion doesn’t mean someone is delusional, psychotic or schizophrenic.  Stop using those words as a way to take away someones credibility.
