MISC SENTENCE STARTERS WITH A DASH OF ANGST
❝ i can't even say he deceived me. i knew exactly what he was and i jumped in anyway. ❞
❝ i think eventually i got so used to the chaos and the pain and the toxicity i began to look for it. ❞
❝ i never got a chance to discover myself. i never had that privilege. ❞
❝ you can tell me anything. i mean i can't promise i'm good at keeping secrets, but i'm a hell of a listener. ❞
❝ no one wants to yearn anymore. ❞
❝ i'm doing some of my best work here and you don't even have the decency to roll your eyes at me. honestly it's hurtful. ❞
❝ i know what you're thinking. ❞
❝ if i ask for your help are you gonna make a big deal out of it? ❞
❝ can we just be normal for like two seconds for once. ❞
❝ i would say i don't know what's wrong with you but i actually do and that's the problem. ❞
❝ against my better judgement i trust you and i think that says a lot about the state of the world right now. ❞
❝ i don't actually care but i'm bored so i'm here. ❞
❝ last time i listened to you we almost died. ❞
❝ i would've come sooner. i would've been here if you'd only asked. ❞
❝ i don't want to hurt anymore. ❞
❝ you don't have to hurt anymore. you can let go of those burdens. ❞
❝ it'd be a lot easier if i actually cared as little as i pretend to. ❞
❝ i do need you. i wouldn't be here if i didn't. ❞
❝ sometimes you don't know it's wrong until it's too late. sometimes you don't know you're being hurt until you realize you're in pieces. ❞
❝ pretending you don't need people doesn't make you strong it just makes you a jackass. ❞
❝ you're gonna be okay. eventually. but first you gotta not be okay for a while. it's gotta suck so you can actually recognize when you're alright again. ❞
❝ you shouldn't have said that. ❞
❝ sometimes i wish they had done something worse. then it'd justify how hard it's been to get over it. ❞
❝ i wish you actually understood me. ❞

PROMPTS FOR FEELING SAFE / EXPRESSING COMFORT * assorted dialogue, adjust as necessary, send "reverse" for the reversal of action prompts. suggested by judgementdaysunshine
DIALOGUE PROMPTS
i haven't felt like this in a very long time.
i wanted to thank you for protecting me back there.
you stepped in when you didn't need to.
for once in my life, i feel safe.
this place gives me a good feeling.
i feel safe in your arms.
it's been a while since i slept through the night without any nightmares.
i could get used to this.
i won't let anything happen to you.
you make me feel safe.
you didn't have to step in and help me, but you did, and i appreciate that.
no one's ever stood up for me like that before.
my whole life has been filled with conflict and pain. not anymore.
maybe i'll finally know peace with you.
we deserve an easy life.
you're my port in the storm.
i can't tell you the last time i actually felt safe.
you know me. i don't let my guard down for just anyone.
something changed to make me feel this way.
you're safe here with me.
they won't come after you, and if they do? they'll have to go through me.
it feels nice, being here with you.
you make me feel like i can accomplish anything.
i can be myself with you.
we're looking out for you.
you won't judge me for the things i say.
just stay here a while, if you don't mind.
so this is what safety feels like.
i can finally breathe again.
nothing can touch you while i'm here.
you can go back to sleep. it's safe.
no one will hurt you anymore.
my life is in your hands.
promise me you won't abandon me?
i'll be right here when you wake up.
you taught me how to protect myself.

The embers flickered on the edge of the shadows, keeping the darkness of the curse at bay. And in this darkness, Riesling felt a pull that was as inexplicable as the vile Urge that drove him to commit heinous acts beyond his control. A feeling he detested.
For if he was going to kill, it would be his choice. Not some rabid madness that caused him to take leave of his senses. He would not be some mindless animal controlled by impulse. Everything he did was by his own hand, his own choice.
Such was the case with his decision to slaughter the grove. To fight side by side with Minthara and rescue her from Moonrise. Now free of the Absolute's control, the drow had proven herself to be a valuable ally and a beauty to behold in the slaughter she brought to their enemies.
And here they were after the latest skirmish - her cleaning the blood and gore from his blackened armour. Whenever she gave him an instruction, Riesling consented, tilting his head so she could access any red patches with her cloth, his intelligent, coal-coloured eyes watching her every movement.
"You fought well today," Riesling remarked, his voice a gruff thunderclap that came deep from within his throat. "But there are many battles yet to be fought before we topple Ketheric. There will be no tender touch for him as he dies screaming."
A mixture of dark humour and seriousness cut through his words. He liked to think he'd come to know her enough to see that her actions with him weren't out of softness, but that he would still make a comment in order to keep her wits and tongue as sharp as her blade.
Starter inspired by this post
Blood: Sender cleans blood off of the receiver
Wringing the damp rag out she took another pass across his armor. The water stayed warm, its bowl resting on embers that were smoldering just enough to still emit heat, but it was already tinged a translucent pink. It was late, with others already off to their own bed rolls, but still early enough in the night she had energy. Her own armor could be easily dipped in a creek with any more detailed cleaning being held off on until it started effecting her senses, be that touch or smell, so she took to helping her fellow paladin with his. Her efforts were not any more gentle than she would normally be. There wasn't a notable amount of care or kindness to her touches. This interaction, though close, was just as much Minthara as she always was. What brought her to tend to him was her sense camaraderie with him. He was a soldier along side her. She would never call him her brother in arms, she had a brother and held disdain for him even now and did not need another, but he was a comrade who had proven himself in battle to be worthy of at least of the respect she would give a soldier. That respect is what had her come over with warm coals and water, doing so after she had cleaned her weapons off. That respect did not get him meticulous efforts but it did get him clean armor and a clean face if he held still. Minthara was focused as she cleaned and as such hadn't uttered much more than a, "Move here" every so often so she could clean a specific spot or get a better look at him.

The paladin's gaze shifted from Lae'zel to the slumbering dragon. Even though she'd been at the camp for some time now, Riesling still felt a tremour of awe run down his spine whenever he looked at her. She was a formidable creature, forged in the fires of war exactly like he was.
Exactly like Lae'zel and it made him feel a kind of unspoken kinship with githyanki and dragon. Now more than ever their paths had been cast into uncertainty, exiled and hunted by their own, despite the oaths that had been sworn.
Riesling only knew as much of githyanki doctrine as Lae'zel had shared with him on the nights when he'd asked her about their ways, swung his weapon against her in training drills so he could understand their battle tactics.
Giving yourself to a cause was something that needed no explanation.
Doubt was an enemy he faced daily.
"In my experience, the simplest way to banish indecision is with the blade." Riesling spoke bluntly, as subtle as a sledgehammer.
"And I've seen you to be many things, Lae'zel. Indecisive isn't one of them. Should you wish to exorcise these doubts, my sword arm is ready to test you once more."
He flashed a small smile in the firelight. A man of more action than words, Riesling had come to see their practice sessions as a way to sharpen their skills and minds.
Besides, he had his own nightmare to banish.
The Oath Sworn.
I think I’ve seen this film before And I didn’t like the ending You’re not my homeland anymore So what am I defending now? You were my town Now I’m in exile, seein’ you out I think I’ve seen this film before
You remember their faces. The ones who raised you. Casthos and Elyria. You remember your childhood, seeping into you with a thousand little details.
The kind smile of your mother’s face, the soft dimples that form at the edges. The gentle laugh that comes with the explanation of why you don’t have a tail or horns. The softness of her lips on your forehead as she tells you that you’re special.
You remember the size of your father. The curve of his horns and the way they remind you of the stags in the forest beyond your home. The strength of his hand on your shoulder that tells seems to let you know you can do anything. The words of encouragement that follow you as you stalk with him through the trees, searching for the evening meal.
You remember the fire in the hearth at night and the stories told to you in front of it. The tales of Balduran and his adventures. The tiefling twins Havilar and Farideh, who carved their own legends into the Sword Coast. The paladin Gareth Dragonsbane, who shaped kingdoms and lived by ideals of duty, honour and courage.
You feel a desire to swear an oath of your own.
Blood. So much blood. It runs red down your arms, staining the soil, watering the earth. The bodies shift, black shadows, the corpses of the githyanki you slayed in the creche filling your vision along with the bodies you don't recognise. Bodies that are...familiar.
Snapping awake, Riesling felt his heart pounding in his chest like a hammer. Another fucking nightmare, tinged with the vile whispers of the darkness inside of him.
Wiping away the weariness from his eyes, he stood to full height, head too heavy to sleep. The camp was silent, save for the soft grinding of a blade against a whetstone. A sound he knew well, anchoring him to the moment.
He shrugged his broad shoulders, the battles from the creche still aching, taking his mind off himself, towards a companion as restless as himself.
Riesling watched Lae'zel from afar for a little while. He could only imagine what she must be feeling after the revelations of the Dream Companion and Vlaakith's deceit.
"Lae'zel," he greeted her, the gruff bass of his voice a dark wind in the night. "How are you feeling?"
It was a good a place to start as any.

"A woman after my own heart." The paladin mused, holding her gaze. He was so used to looking down at people. Rare for a woman to match his height but he wasn't complaining.
He took a long slug and offered the flask to her, perhaps staring at her for longer than he intended. Riesling pushed a hand through his hair, feeling a mix of things: adrenaline, weariness, the vile urge that whispered to him that he shoved down and washed out with the whisky.
The fight had come on so fast that he'd barely had time to ask her how she felt about Dammon giving her engine an upgrade.
"How's the engine feeling?"
@torntruth
"That was a helluva a fight today, Karlach." The aftermath of battle still gleamed in his eyes, blood singing from the thrill of swinging his bastard greatsword against bastards who thought to underestimate them.
"As easy it'd be to drink this whisky by myself, it'll taste even better sharing it." Riesling grinned, motioning for her to take a seat by the fire with him, a large flask in his hand.

The truth about the world, he said, is that anything is possible. Had you not seen it all from birth and thereby bled it of its strangeness it would appear to you for what it is, a hat trick in a medicine show, a fevered dream, a trance bepopulate with chimeras having neither analogue nor precedent, an itinerant carnival, a migratory tentshow whose ultimate destination after many a pitch in many a mudded field is unspeakable and calamitous beyond reckoning.
The universe is no narrow thing and the order within it is not constrained by any latitude in its conception to repeat what exists in one part in any other part.
Even in this world more things exist without our knowledge than with it and the order in creation which you see is that which you have put there, like a string in a maze, so that you shall not lose your way. For existence has its own order and that no man's mind can compass, that mind itself being but a fact among others.
