He always has dirty fingernails, was that something you thought of and why? It’s about his transience and a dude that’s maybe not really getting chance to take care of himself or shower or you know, I mean you thought that maybe he was living in his car and like, that was, that was kinda my goal with that. Mikey Berzatto Headcanons
Mikey is computer illiterate. He hasn’t had the need to learn to navigate a computer, nor the time. He keeps paper records at The Beef (which is why it took Natalie and Carmen ages to track down the business’s records, thanks to Mikey’s “system”) and doesn’t even own a computer, not at work nor at home.
Despite The Beef's financial struggles, Mikey is decently competent in accounting. He had to teach himself how to navigate the restaurant's books, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to keep the business afloat for two decades. The Beef's downfall was due to the high costs of running a restaurant mixed with Mikey's emotional struggles; none of it was on account of his lack of intelligence.
He helped to financially support Donna and his siblings after his father left when Mikey was about 20. Natalie was 9, Carmen was 4, and Donna was a mess, so Mikey took on the role of the provider. Relying so heavily on Mikey is not something Donna would ever admit, nor would Mikey ask that of her.
He has not been in a committed relationship in years. He’s had a couple of girlfriends in his 20’s and 30’s, but as business at The Beef got worse and the stress grew, he did not have the time nor the energy to invest in a relationship. At least that was his excuse. By the time he got to his late 30’s, all he made time for was a few flings, few and far between.
While he did not get along with Tiffany, a part of him was slightly envious of Richie’s marriage. Purely because Richie had managed to form a long-term relationship, get married, and have a child. Unlike Mikey, Richie could clock out at The Beef and not worry about how the staff was going to be paid next week. And even though Richie’s marriage did not last, he had achieved a milestone Mikey was nowhere close to approaching.
Mikey could not be more proud of his siblings, even if he never told them. Carmy was pursuing his passion and he was brilliant at it. Natalie was smart and successful; she was the one who would be able to build a comfortable, stable life for herself. All of the Berzatto siblings were hardworking, if anything.
Even though Richie is his ride or die, Mikey is not able to open up about his struggles. He can't imagine putting that burden on his friend, who is going through his own marital struggles.
As Carmy would say, Mikey could instantly take the temperature of any room he was in; he could make everyone feel like they were his best friend; he was magnetic. Mikey was great at ascertaining what people needed and adjusting to make them feel comfortable, but that did not mean it put him at ease. Almost his whole life he felt his purpose was to take care of others, while his own needs fell to the wayside. Because of this so-called purpose, Michael never took the time to try to figure out what he wanted out of life. As if he didn't think he deserved this freedom.
