Hello wonderful people! I hope you've been doing well. As the last of the pinch hit works for DBDA Secret Pumpkin 2024 are wrapping up, I wanted to start getting people's thoughts on running this again in 2025.

I really loved running the exchange and I hope you all enjoyed participating. I would love to do this again this year, especially since now I have significantly more than half a clue what I'm doing, so things should run a lot more smoothly.

However, there can't be an exchange without all of you, so I wanted to try to get some vague numbers on how many people would be interested in doing this again. I also wanted to raise the possibility of changing the dates that the exchange runs.

Last year, the exchange launched in late October, and so I called it the Secret Pumpkin because it was like a Secret Santa, but, Halloween. However, by the time the February deadline rolled around, the Halloween spirit was kind of not really there so much and so the name didn't necessarily fit super well.

Therefore I would like to raise the possibility of running this year's exchange to end on 31st October, so that the exchange can better earn its vaguely thematic title, and meaning that signups would open in the next month or so. However, I know there are other fandom events going on and I imagine a fair few of them might be focused around Halloween (since, y'know, the main characters of the show are ghosts), so I wanted to know which option you would all prefer.

Once the poll closes I'll do another post to announce what will happen next, in the meantime please do let me know if you have any other thoughts on the exchange.

I have an especially stupid idea for you all today. One day Charles comes back to the office with a bisexual flag patch added on his coat. Crystal and Niko immediately flag it like "!!!!!" and ask him about it. He just smiles and says "Pretty mint, right? It's got all of your favourite colours." pointing out each colour for Edwin, Crystal and Niko.

Crystal and Niko would love to be touched by this gesture if they weren't busy crying at his ignorance.

It gets worse when he passes Edwin a button with multiple different blue stripes saying that it reminded him of his best mate. Edwin also doesn't know why both girls have their heads in their hands. He thinks this is a lovely gift.

It would take a good deal of finesse to make it fit with what we’re told in canon but. Please consider the Infamous Puppy Debacle having been Charles being turned into a puppy. Some wizard thinks he’s awfully clever making his “What is he, your little attack dog?” line literal. Turns out an adolescent St. Bernard is half mismatched limbs and half teeth and all protective instinct and, also, weighs more than your average wizard, and this does not end well for the wizard.

(Unfortunately, even an adolescent St Bernard who is trying his very damnedest to be careful is still massive and gangly and above all drooly, and after the third spellbook was ruined because Charles shook his head and drool went flying all over the room, Edwin snapped at him quite harshly and Charles looked like, well, a yelled-at puppy, which was miserable for all involved, and… and that’s why they avoid such situations now.)

Headcannon that postcannon Charles doesnt like leaving Edwin alone for long streches of time.

You know the way he did in the beggining of the show, leaving Edwin alone so that Charles could be with Crystal or just giving Edwin space to be with other people(Monty or Niko). I think post-Hell Charles Rowland would feel uneasy about not having Edwin in his line of sight while at the same time not wanting to make a big deal out of it.

Like how in the last episode Edwin is alone and Charles leaves others to pack so he could check up on Edwin, that sort of thing. Or how he was hessitent to follow Crystals plan at first becouse he has to rescue(see) Edwin ( to me it also looks like Charles was so busy rushing to Edwin he didnt noitice Nikos body but that might just be me)

Anyways i think it would be a fun direction to take Charles's characther in. Considering in s1 he is already weary of Edwin spending time with the Cat King, youd get that whole jealousy thing but doubled and mixed in with his feeling of inadequacy as the brawn. But also s1 establishes Charles as being at least partially insecure about their bond: having to correct Edwin whenever Edwin says how Charles would move on quickly and constanty seeking reassurment from edwin about their friendship (ep 1 when he asks what would happen if death came, ep 4 with his fight with the night nurse, seeing Brad and Hunter the best friends as him and Edwin)

And then you also have the reversal of how Edwin was jealous of Charles spending lots of times with Crystal and now Charles is protesting every second Edwin isnt with him. And ofcourse Charles does it from a place of fear and love but Edwin would maybe interpret it the wrong way, who knows?

And, from what the writers have told us, Edwin in s2 spent at least some amount of time flirting with other men (hopefully without Charles lurking in the background) and from what we know from that one cameo Jayden and George did, there was a lot of tension between the boys...

Now im not a writer i didnt write the s2 script or anything, im not saying this is what would have happened in s2 but.... i think the tension might have come from that. From Charles seeing Hell as a traumatic expirience and his PTSD manifesting as his insistence on Edwin not leaving his side, Charles's insecurities and his fear of losing Edwin being at an all time high. While Edwin, who has learnd how to forget Hell, is acting as if nothing happened at all, exploring his sexuality and making new friends in the process.

It would make Charles confront all of the skeletons he's been hiding in the closet but also it would ask the simple question of why is Charles so insecure in their friendship? Why is he constantly mentioning them being best mates? Why does he need it so much? Why is he constantly searching from reassurences that they are best friends?

And for more angst, from Edwins point of view he is doing everything Charles wanted him to do in s1. Hes accepting and letting the dead boy detectives workplace to grow and change, he is being more open and friendlier, he is encouraging Charles friendship/relationship with Crystal and he is no longer playing trauma Olympics at the drop of a hat. So why is Charles so mad? Hes working through his shame and his supiriority complex, hes growing as a person and Charles is still stuck at the staircase.

Post s1 au where Charles tries to bond with the Night Nurse and jokes that she needs to put herself out there and date someone, take advantage of the fact that she's on earth now and that maybe her great love is just around the corner, and she goes "and what would you have me do, just stumble in an attic somewhere with severe internal bleeding and wait for the love of my life to show up just because it somehow had worked for you? No thanks!"

Charles is startled by this, like "love of- what??" And then it hits him that the NN thinks him and Edwin are dating and that holy shit, they really did have quite a romantic meeting, didn't they, and does he actually want to date Edwin?? (Duh)

The Night Nurse doesn’t buy it when Charles tells her they're not dating so it becomes a running gag that Charles tries to stop the NN from saying things like "your beau" or any other lines referencing them being together to keep it from Edwin so he's constantly interrupting her or pushing Edwin into other rooms when she visits etc

Finally, Edwin catches on and corners Charles like: why on earth would the NN think we're dating?!

Charles: um, she saw my memories of how we met- of my death

Edwin: so? She saw it from your perspective, so why would it lead her to a conclusion that we're dating?

Charles:...

Edwin: Charles.

Charles: *silence intensifies*
