edit jul 9 25: hello!!! so i initially fundraised for this because i couldnt afford to get it myself and my mother told me she wouldnt be able to help, but she actually turned out to be able to assist after all. because of that and because i received quite a bit more than the initial goal, ill use the funds to get a glasses prescription instead! ill actually buy the glasses next month, and i should be able to cover that myself.

i think it's always worth establishing that regardless of his quality as a writer tom king is simply an evil person unrelated to anything he has ever put to the page but i also think that the ways in which he is an evil person very much inform his writing and any discussion of his works should necessarily work in concert with that. anyway this is how in his latest issue of trinity there's a nebulous "thing in the middle east" that batman and robin have to leave to interfere with.

The “it’s about control” argument with anorexia is so frustrating. I understand it’s probably reductive to say that fatphobia is what primarily inspires eating disorders, but as a fat person who’s also had/has an eating disorder I’m still going to side-eye anybody who tries to shut that conversation down right away. Even if I try to hear their argument out, I still always find myself asking, “Okay, but why then is THIS what they feel compelled to control? Why is THIS how they attempt to gain control? Do you honestly think that’s random? That it has nothing to do with a society that views fat people as out of control? That it has nothing to do with a society that equates weight loss and weight management with self-discipline?” It’s just…obtuse, to me. I feel like it comes from a place of viewing fatphobia very two-dimensionally, as though the only way fatphobia manifests is through not liking the way fatness looks, and nothing else. Even if someone with anorexia isn’t concerned with losing thin privilege (which is my experience, could not be further from the truth anyway) where does the idea that becoming/being thin and remaining thin = control come from? Where does the idea that restricting food = control come from? And can you honestly say that if society’s view of thin people and fat people were reversed, this is still what your eating disorder would look like?

agreed & i also just don't think that concept of 'control' is very coherent. at best it's a trivial statement: name a behaviour that isn't 'about control', like in the sense of trying to exert control over your life and to feel possessed of your own corporal form lol who is out here thinking oh i hope my actions lead me to become completely unmoored and unfunctional. and it goes back to the fundamental issue of trying to frame eating disorders around a personal psychological impulse while eliding the material circumstances that make them possible or necessary: food insecurity/poverty, other reasons adequate energy intake is difficult to maintain, necessity of navigating social valuations of eating behaviours and bodies, and at some point in the process the effects of semistarvation itself also become causal in this process.

the psychological element of desire is clearly not irrelevant but it's much more rarely originary than people think & is really mostly just an update to the family-based psychoanalytic etiologies of the early-to-mid twentieth century that shifts off blaming the mother to blaming the archetypal wealthy white perfectionist teenage girl. an inadequate explanation even in the minuscule minority of such 'textbook' cases & laughably incapable of capturing anything at all about the vast majoritt of anorexics

Help a single mother of two small children in north Gaza

Maha and her two children Joan (7) and Khalil (5) are displaced in north Gaza. They are still in besieged Beit Lahiya, and need funds for transportation out of the area ($500 usd) and rent for shelter (about $2,000 usd). They also need to purchase Joan's medication, which is $500 usd, and $200 usd to buy a bag of flour that is not soiled by insects and/or mold. Anything you can give, no matter how small it seems, will help this young family survive genocide.
