Something a bit different! I recently took part in a 10 day game jam, challenging myself to create some horrible little creatures in pixel format! Definitely a tricky task, given the time and pixel limits, but in other ways kinda refreshing not to have to spend hours rendering a thing XD Had a lot of fun injecting a weird atmosphere and trying to hint at some Deep Lore in this strange little candle village.

Last night, The Stars Under Lockehurst received honorable mentions at the Spooktober award ceremony, and came 9th place out of 200+ entries. No 'best monster' award, sadly, but we did achieve over 1300 plays in the month of October. Here are some silly reaction images I doodled with our monster enemies, while watching the play counters climbing over the month :>

And finally, sprites for Our Lady of Reaching Tides, a siren-like cosmic entity inspired by creatures from Filipino and South East Asian myth. Definitely not your average mermaid ;)

Sprites for Ghothrud, formerly the scourge of the coastline, swapped his murderin claws for a goat farm on the outskirts of Lockehurst. Affectionately known by the dev team as 'crab dad', he's actually based more on an ancient cambrian-age arthropods. ;) He holds the special position of being the only love interest I designed both the human and monster version of!

Secondary character exploration sketches and final sprite work for The Stars Under Lockehurst - a visual novel made for the Spooktober VN jam. Three will try to eat you, and the fourth has a Totally Normal Dog that, yes, you can pet!!!! Did I mention that I had a little bit too much fun on this project?

Oh, go on then, I'll give you a lil critter as well! You might see these little guys on the beach near Lockehurst - they're stubborn and territorial little things. But don't worry, they're easily bribed with a scaly treat or two!

So I spent the last month doing a heckin load of work with a great team of people for this years Spooktober visual novel game jam. And I'm so excited to finally show it off!!!! The Stars Under Lockehurst is a Lovecraft inspired mystery/ romance VN, with a lovable cast of characters that may or may not be hideous eldritch entities in disguise... Something's killing people in Cape Lockehurst - solve the mystery, before it tears you apart 👿 🦈

So happy that you guys like my beetle companion concepts ;-; Here's the rest of the development for the lil guy, including SNOOTS (dw I'm totally keeping a lot of those original concepts back for misc forest critters!)

His name is Wynn, btw :> He actually ended up looking more like a hercules beetle - which was a surprise, sorry weevil fans - but still with a lil prehensile trunk that can help to dig and pull out herbs and roots. I still need to decide on his colour scheme because I love and want all of them...
